Summary

  • Patch 7 for Baldur's Gate 3 introduced a toolkit that allows the official integration of mods into the game.
  • One player showcased their fully playable map made using a mod that removes the toolkit's restrictions on custom map making.
  • While Larian Studios has yet to comment on the toolkit being unlocked, the community is excited for future possibilities.

A player of Baldur's Gate 3 has already figured out the game's recently-released toolkit, and has shown off their very own map made within the software. Larian Studios opened the floodgates for modding with Patch 7 of Baldur's Gate 3, and fans are already figuring out how to make the most of the kit.

Baldur's Gate 3 has received its fair share of post-launch patches that have taken in player feedback and used it to enhance the lifespan of the game, with notable inclusions being changes to Minthara to make her easier to obtain on a standard run, and the introduction of the famously difficult Honour Mode. Patch 7 for Baldur's Gate 3 arrived earlier this month, being one of the biggest released for the game yet, delivering a myriad of highly-requested changes and features for fans of the game. The biggest of these changes was the release of the Baldur's Gate 3 Toolkit, which officially integrates mods into the game and grants mod makers access to the same tools that Larian Studios had when making the game, albeit with a small handful of restrictions.

With the added mod support in Patch 7, Baldur's Gate 3 players can explore community-made content more than ever.

A player named Siegfre was able to make a mod that unrestricted the toolkit, and using this, players will have full access to everything they need to make whatever their heart desires, which is exactly what Reddit user katszenBurger has done. Their map sports a small cliff and tower surrounded by water with a bridge running over it, and according to katszenBurger, the map is fully playable, as characters can walk around, interact with objects, and even fight placed mobs on the map. Of everything new that Baldur's Gate 3 received with Patch 7, the ability for players to make their own levels has the community understandably excited.

However, this freedom may come at a cost. While Patch 7 sports official mod support and gave players the tools to accompany this, the features that allow for things like map-making were initially locked. This didn't take long to break, but these features were still restricted to the public. Larian has yet to make any official comment on the Toolkit being unlocked and what can be done with it, but given that the studio still has plans for Baldur's Gate 3's future, it may not be comfortable completely handing the keys over to the community.

This is just as well, because there's still plenty of content that fans want in Baldur's Gate 3. Patch 7 will not be the last major patch for the game, and there's still every opportunity for Larian to implement something like map-making at a later date when the software is more easily accessible. Regardless of whether it does or not, the ability to make custom maps is a huge milestone for the modding community, as well as for the longevity of the game itself, so long as it's here to stay.
