Summary

  • Many players think Baldur's Gate 3 should have a warning feature for concentration spells to avoid costly mistakes and wasted resources.
  • The game currently does not offer any reminders or mercy when it comes to losing concentration on spells, unlike Dungeons and Dragons.
  • A significant number of players support the implementation for a beginner-friendly warning system, especially considering the potential consequences of losing concentration on spells like Haste.

Some fans think Baldur’s Gate 3 should add a warning to the game if they are about to cast a concentration spell while already concentrating on another one. This simple quality of life feature would help many new players avoid an embarrassing mistake while playing spellcasters in Baldur’s Gate 3.

Like the 5th Edition Dungeons and Dragons system it is built on, certain spells in Baldur’s Gate 3 require concentration. The most common way to lose concentration on a spell is by taking damage. That said, players can only concentrate on one spell at a time, so if they cast a second one, the first one will immediately end, wasting spell slots and action resources in the process.

Baldur’s Gate 3 fan Aitnoon made a post on Reddit admitting this has happened to them on multiple occasions. They suggested Larian create a beginner-friendly option that would add a pop-up any time they are about to break their concentration on a spell by casting another one. Like Baldur's Gate 3's Karmic Dice system, they recommend it as a quality of life option players could deactivate. This simple addition could help players avoid the easy mistake of breaking their own concentration.

In Dungeons and Dragons, most Dungeon Masters are forgiving enough to remind players they will lose concentration on a spell by casting another, or will allow players to change their mind after they realize it themselves. Baldur’s Gate 3 has no such mercy, and with the ability to cast spells as an action and a bonus action in one turn, many players have admitted to casting spells like Bless and Shield of Faith in the same turn, only to realize their mistake after it is too late.

With over 1,000 upvotes and 400 comments in less than a day, it is clear many Baldur’s Gate 3 players agree with Aitnoon. While some believe the existing concentration icon is enough, and that players simply need to get better, many admitted to having made this mistake more than once on their own games – even D&D veterans with hundreds of hours in Baldur’s Gate 3. Considering how punishing it is to lose concentration on spells like Haste, the majority of fans seem to agree this optional feature would be a good addition.

Baldur’s Gate 3 has received tons of support over the month since its launch, and with the PS5 release imminent and the Xbox launch not long after, more updates are on the way. If players are lucky, maybe Larian will implement this warning feature in one of these future patches.

Baldur's Gate 3 is available now on PC and arrives on PS5 September 6, followed by an Xbox Series X/S later this year.
