Those dedicated enough to finish a 100+ hour playthrough of Baldur’s Gate 3 won’t be surprised to learn that there is content they missed out on. Even those who maximize their playthroughs know that they will be locked out of certain content if they lock into specific paths. This design choice encourages replayability, as each decision shapes the world in unique ways. However, beyond the well-known branching storylines and companion interactions, there are entire characters in Baldur’s Gate 3 that many players will never meet. Whether hidden behind obscure choices, exclusive to certain origins, or simply tucked away in the vast world of Faerun, these NPCs add layers of depth to an already immersive experience.

Larian Studios’ attention to detail is astounding, investing efforts and time into interactions that only a small percentage of players will encounter. In a game characterized by its memorable and well-written characters, Baldur’s Gate 3 developers have taken world-building to another level, ensuring that even the most hidden NPCs feel alive and meaningful. Acknowledging that, Baldur’s Gate 3 devs crafted a virtual world teeming with hidden NPCs that require specific choices or circumstances to encounter. And as Larian Studios moves away from Baldur’s Gate 3, there is still so much for players to discover. For players who stray from the beaten path, there’s a treasure trove of hidden characters with unique personalities and dialogue for players to discover.

Rare Baldur's Gate 3 NPCs – Sceleritas Fel

It’s hard to conceive a plot-critical character as one most players will never encounter. However, the official Baldur’s Gate 3 X account revealed that only 15% of players play as Dark Urge one year after launch. Despite the fact that Dark Urge is such a plot-critical character, most players opt for a custom Tav instead.

Sceleritas Fel remains a stranger to those who haven't ventured into the shadowy depths of the Dark Urge's mind. Sceleritas Fel is a fiendish and diminutive butler who claims to serve Dark Urge, and encourages them to satiate their bloodlust. While Sceleritas may be a manifestation of the Dark Urge’s insatiable thirst for murder, he also becomes an interesting dilemma or aid depending on player choice. Ally or obstacle, it’s a shame that Sceleritas is a bit of a hidden character for most players.

Rare Baldur's Gate 3 NPCs – Quil Grootslang

Larian’s dedication to choice-based storytelling means that some characters exist purely as backups, or NPCs designed to fill in for those who might die or are knocked out due to player choices. These fail-safe figures often go unnoticed since they only appear when primary story figures are missing. But for those who deliberately play against the grain, meeting these rare NPCs can be an unexpected treat. Quil Grootsland is likely the first fail-safe character players encounter, stepping in for fan-favorite Alfira. Her fate is among the saddest in the Dark Urge path, making it one of the cruelest things a Dark Urge player will encounter during their playthrough.

Quil Grootsland is a character only those playing as the Dark Urge can encounter. Quil is a dragonborn minstrel who approaches the player’s camp one night seeking shelter. Young, naive, but ever so optimistic, Quil is very grateful to find a place of respite after getting robbed of her items. Although a sweet camp follower, she does not remain with the crew for long. However, if players got Quil instead of Alfira visiting their camp, they were likely avoiding this fate for the beloved tiefling bard.

Rare Baldur's Gate 3 NPCs – Asharak

Most players are able to meet Asharak as someone who deeply cares for the tiefling children. However, most players will never meet him as the leader of the tiefling camp. If, for any reason, Zevlor is unavailable to take the helm of the tiefling leadership, Asharak will step in for him as a replacement. If Zevlor is alive and well, Asharak will happily remain a combat and weapons trainer for the little ones at the Druid Grove. He can be found where players can recruit Wyll to their party.

Rare Baldur's Gate 3 NPCs – Cerys

A fail-safe for a fail-safe is a rare occurrence. Some may even argue that it is an unnecessary addition to a game. But Larian Studios did not want to take their chances and created Cerys. Cerys is a tiefling character that players venturing into BG3’s spooky Act 2 will meet at the Last Light Inn. However, players with playthroughs where both Zevlor and Asharak meet an early end have the chance to meet Cerys a little earlier than originally planned. Cerys will step up to the plate as the leader of the tieflings seeking shelter at the Druid Grove if both Option A and Option B are unavailable. With two characters to step up to his plate and a tough rescue, Zevlor can’t catch a break.

Baldurs Gate 3 Dark Urge Astarion Same Coin
Why Baldur's Gate 3's Dark Urge and Astarion Are Two Sides of the Same Coin

Baldur’s Gate 3’s Dark Urge and Astarion share striking similarities in how trauma and control shape their stories.

Rare Baldur's Gate 3 NPCs – Boss Friol

Roah Moonglow and Boss Friol represent two sides of Baldur’s Gate 3’s intricate world-building, each playing key roles in the evolving power struggles of the Lower City. Roah, a Zhentarim trader with a ruthless business sense, is an opportunist who survives by aligning herself with whoever offers the greatest profit. Players first meet her in the Goblin Camp, where she seeks to profit off the Absolute’s growing influence, and she continues to resurface in later acts, making shady deals and scheming for control of the Guild. However, if Roah dies before Act Three, Boss Friol takes her place.

Friol, in contrast, is immediately hostile to the party, found conspiring as soon as players meet her. While Roah plays a long game of shifting allegiances, Friol is a direct aggressor, aiming to take over the Guild with brute force. Her presence ensures that, even in Roah’s absence, the Zhentarim’s plans continue to unfold. However, because many players keep Roah alive for her valuable trades, Friol is an NPC that most will never meet unless they choose or accidentally stumble into a more violent path.

Rare Baldur's Gate 3 NPCs – Zae

With the right sequence of choices, players can experience a fan-favorite highlight of Act 1: the tiefling party. As a token of gratitude, the tieflings will arrive at the Wilderness camp and throw players a party they will never forget. Yet, if somehow the tieflings meet an early end, there are fail-safes to replace them at the party. Although there are several other characters who take the place of OG tiefling refugees, Zae stands out among them because of her party time request and attitude. If Zae makes it to the tiefling party, she will sport a green dress and a cheerful demeanor, drunkenly inviting the player to dance with her. The player, if moved by her charm, may opt to show her a few of their own moves.

Rare Baldur's Gate 3 NPCs – Gerson the Bent

When it comes to bizarre coincidences, Baldur’s Gate 3’s narrative is full of them. However, one bizarre coincidence was accounted for during the game’s development and resulted in Larian Studios creating a character for it. Gerson is perhaps the rarest character to encounter in Baldur’s Gate 3, as he only appears under excruciatingly specific circumstances. Players get to meet Gerson if they have wiped out the goblin camp of all its leaders in Act 1 while also leaving at least one party member back at the Druid Grove. Gerson will come to the player after the battles have been won, announcing that the threats have been neutralized. A common theory as to why Gerson even exists is to maintain player immersion during a plot-critical transition.
