Summary

  • The Scarlet Leather Armour is the best Uncommon Armor for stealth, providing a bonus to Stealth Checks without any disadvantages.
  • The Half Plate Armour +1 has the highest AC of all Uncommon Medium Armors, making it a valuable item that should not be sold early in the game.
  • The Plate Armour +1 is the best Uncommon Armor piece, with a high AC of 19 and the Superior Plate effect that reduces damage from common sources, making it a strong contender against the best Heavy Armor options.

There are five rarities of armor in Baldur's Gate 3 and while Uncommon Armor is the second least rare, there are plenty of pieces that can go toe to toe with Armor found later in the game.

The best Uncommon Armor pieces have a very high Armor Class (AC) which is the number that enemies must roll in order to hit an enemy in Baldur's Gate 3. They might also have some unique effects, which make them more suited to certain builds and play styles. It is also important to have the correct Armor Proficiency to wear either Light, Medium, or Heavy Armor, whereas anyone can wear Clothing.

Light Armor

12 + Dexterity Modifier

Stealthy: Gain a +1 bonus to Stealth Checks.

Out of all the Uncommon Armor pieces in BG3, none is better for stealth than Scarlet Leather Armour which not only has no disadvantages for stealth like most Armor, but it actually gives a +1 bonus every time a character undergoes a Stealth Check.

Other than being perfect for a Rogue build, Scarlet Leather Armour also gives a relatively high AC for Light Armor but is unfortunately only dropped in Act 3 by Dolor at the Wine Festival.

Medium Armor

16 + Dexterity Modifier (Max 2)

Disadvantage on Stealth rolls. AC bonus from Dexterity limited to +2.

There isn't too much special about the Half Plate Armour +1, but out of all the Uncommon Medium Armor pieces, it has the highest AC of 16 which can be increased to 18 if players have at least 14 Dexterity.

As Medium Armor is highly flexible, this is one of the items in Baldur's Gate 3 that players should not sell, at least in the early and mid-stages of the game. Half Plate Armour +1 is sold by a few merchants in the game.

5 Protective Plate

Heavy Armor

18

Grants Resistance to Necrotic Damage.

If players are ever facing the best Necrotic spells in BG3 or other forms of Necrotic damage, then Protective Plate will be their best Armor option.

It also happens to have a very high Armor Class of 18, which means any character wearing it will be very hard to hit in the first place. Protective Plate can be looted from some Animated Armour in Act 2 at the bottom of a pit in the House of Healing Morgue.

4 Poisoner's Robe

Clothing

10 + Dexterity Modifier

Poison Trails: When the wearer casts a spell that deals Poison damage, it deals an additional 1d4 Poison Damage.

While some players will want to know how to cure Poison in BG3, others are looking to wield it, and the Poisoner's Robe is perfect for those who want to see their foes die a slow and agonizing death.

If players have a few spells that deal Poison damage, then this Clothing item will amplify their damage tremendously. To get their hands on the Poisoner's Robe, players should head to the Whispering Depth where it is dropped by the Phase Spider Matriarch.

3 Studded Leather Armour +1

Light Armor

13 + Dexterity Modifier

N/A

With a high AC of 13 that can be improved with Dexterity, Studded Leather Armour +1 is one of the best Light Armor pieces in BG3 particularly for an item that is considered Uncommon as opposed to Rare.

While it doesn't have any unique effects, this also means it has no downsides such as Disadvantage on Stealth Checks. Studded Leather Armour +1 can be found at random by exploring in Act 2.

2 Luminous Armour

Baldur's Gate 3 Luminous Armour

Type

AC

Effects

Medium Armor

15 + Dexterity Modifier (Max 2)

Radiating Shockwave: When the wearer deals Radiant damage, they cause a Radiant Shockwave. Inflict Radiating Orb in a 3 m / 10 ft radius.

While Luminous Armour isn't quite the best Medium Armor in Baldur's Gate 3 with more protective pieces found in the Rare and Very Rare categories, it is incredibly strong for an Uncommon item that can be found so early in the game.

Although it has a high AC for any user, it reaches its potential when worn by someone who deals Radiant damage. Luminous Armour can be found in a locked and trapped chest underneath the Defiled Temple in the Selunite Outpost.

1 Plate Armour +1

Baldur's Gate 3 Plate Armour +1

Type

AC

Effects

Heavy Armor

19

Superior Plate: You take 1 less damage from Slashing, Piercing and Bludgeoning sources. Disadvantage on Stealth rolls. No AC Bonus from Dexterity.

Easily the best Uncommon Armor piece is the Plate Armour +1 which has such a high AC of 19 that it can compete with the best Heavy Armor in Baldur's Gate 3.

The Superior Plate effect is also great as it reduces damage from some of the most common damage types in the game, with practically all non-magic damage being reduced by 1 every time. Plate Armour +1 can be bought from various merchants in Acts 1 and 2.

Baldur's Gate 3 is out now on PC and PlayStation 5, with an Xbox Series X/S version in the works.
