Ball X Pit is a relatively easy game to understand and one that will not let up as soon as players start. They will begin with one hero who will shoot their special ball and baby balls out periodically. It’s a roguelike that is also an on-rails block breaker game, which is a huge mashup of genres, but after one run, it will all click.

10 Best Devolver Digital Games, Ranked

Devolver Digital has released numerous acclaimed games across several genres. Here are the best, ranked.

As players defeat enemies in Ball X Pit, they will level up, which will then give players access to three random upgrades. There are passive skills, and then there are balls, which can be added to the arsenal, from balls of fire to balls of poison. Which balls will make players stronger on their runs? These are the ones to get.

Burn: Damage Enemies Over Time with Fire

Fire is a classic element in RPGs and video games as a whole. The Burn ball can damage enemies once and also has a chance to ignite them to cause burning damage over a short period. It’s a great ball throughout the game, but it’s especially useful during the second stage, which is based around ice enemies.

Most fusions with the Burn ball will simply add fire damage to the base attack, but there are some unique examples, like when combined with the Iron Ball, the combo will make the area an effective Bomb ball.

Laser (Horizontal/Vertical): Attack Rows and Columns with Lasers

There are two types of Laser balls in the game. There is a horizontal version, which will hit random lines of enemies, while the vertical version will tackle columns. Like a game of Tetris, attacking full rows or columns of enemies in Ball X Pit can be very beneficial. The damage is not that strong at first, but with upgrades, players can decimate the field of enemies quickly.

These roguelikes can be thanked for helping certain now-trending mechanics and features become near-standard in the genre.

Combined, they can form the Holy Laser, which will have a more limited range, but it will attack vertically and horizontally. Otherwise, fusing either of the Laser balls to most types of balls in the game will simply add the other’s effect to the base damage. Players can create a horizontal flaming laser of doom, for example, and that’s not a bad combo.

Poison: Damage Over Time with Poison

Poison is a classic status effect in games, and its purpose in Ball X Pit is the same as most. Hitting an enemy with the Poison ball may cause them to become poisoned and thus take damage over time. Using a Poison ball is one way to break through bigger enemies, like sub-bosses, quicker.

One of the coolest fusions players can use the Poison ball for is the Virus ball, which acquires the Bleed ball, too. It’s a deadlier form of poison that will eat away at the insides of enemies, but overall, the Poison ball’s base effect is useful.

Vampire: Has a Chance to Heal

The base attack for the Vampire ball is not that high. However, what makes it a worthwhile ball is that it can restore health to players. At level one, there is a chance one HP can be restored per hit, but seeing as players will probably kill a hundred or more enemies in a single run, that’s not a bad starting number.

Plus, leveling the Vampire ball up will increase its effects. The Vampire ball is not as cool as getting a real vampire to join the fight, but it’s still a good way to heal. For a good combo, try fusing the Vampire and Iron balls to get Vampire Lord.

Egg Sac: Explodes in Baby Balls

The Egg Sac ball is one of the creepiest in the game, without a doubt, but getting past the creep factor, it’s also very useful. Upon hitting an enemy, the Egg Sac will explode into baby balls and ricochet off other enemies. The more it is upgraded, the more baby balls can potentially bounce around much to the point of turning Ball X Pit into a pinball game.

There is another ball that can assist with creating baby balls, the Brood Mother, and when that ball is fused with the Egg Sac, it will create the Spider Queen. If players want to see some real chaos, they should always strive to fuse these two balls because the Spider Queen can dominate any map in the game.

Earthquake: Attack Multiple Enemies

The Earthquake ball is one of the rare types in the game that can target multiple enemies. Within a few squares of the point of impact, multiple enemies will take damage, with the damage lessening as it spreads out. Leveling the ball up will increase the strength and area of effect, but there is another way to boost the ball, too.

Instead of relying on fusing another ball to the Earthquake, players should seek out the Magic Staff, which is a passive upgrade. This upgrade can widen the area of effect for the Earthquake ball, along with several other types, including the various Laser balls. If players are lucky enough to have the Earthquake ball and any of the Laser balls equipped along with the Magic Staff on hand, then enemies do not stand a chance.

Freeze: Stop Enemies in Their Tracks

The final ball worth seeking out is the exact opposite of fire in an RPG: ice. In Ball X Pit, the Freeze ball is an ice elemental that has a chance of freezing enemies upon impact. In the lower levels, the amount of freeze applied will not halt enemies for long.

However, at greater levels, the freezing process may buy players enough time to get away from an attack from a boss. Finally, the Burn and Freeze balls can be fused to create the mighty Frozen Flame ball, which is an icy hot disaster that brings forth the best of both worlds, but fusing Freeze with most balls in the game can create some positive results, too.
