When EA gave fans their first look at Battlefield 6 last month, it seemed like everything they had wanted from a new entry in the franchise. Not only was Battlefield 6 ditching the futuristic sci-fi setting and specialist system of Battlefield 2042, but it was also embracing a darker and grittier tone compared to its predecessors and returning to the destruction-focused gameplay loop that the series was once known for.

In the last several days, EA has been hosting a Battlefield 6 open beta on all available platforms. So far, those who have played the game have had largely positive things to say about it. Although some players have had critiques about the game's balancing and weapon recoil, many have praised it for its intense gunplay, impressive map design, and realistic destruction mechanics. As great as Battlefield 6's open beta has been, though, it will sadly come to an end on August 17. However, while players who are eager to play more Battlefield 6 will have to wait for the full release of the game this October, a Battlefield surprise may await them in the meantime.

Once BF6's Open Beta Wraps Up, EA Could Have an Ace Up Its Sleeve

If rumors are to be believed—and it is, indeed, only a rumor at the moment—EA could be preparing to launch a major new Battlefield 2042 content update in the near future. This information comes from a data miner by the name of temporyal on Twitter, who provided a brief overview of the content that will be featured in this alleged update. Battlefield 2042 is supposedly going to get several new weapons, including The Prototype (aka "Riverdweller"), the KFS2000 (FN F2000), and the GM6 Lynx, as well as some Pax Armata-themed cosmetics and a few new vault vehicles. Most surprisingly of all, though, the game is also apparently set to receive an all-new map: Iwo Jima.

All Leaked Content in the Rumored Battlefield 2042 Update

  • Map: Iwo Jima
  • Weapon: The Prototype ("Riverdweller")
  • Weapon: KFS2000 (FN F2000)
  • Weapon: GM6 Lynx
  • Vault Vehicle: A-10 Warthog
  • Vault Vehicle: SU-25TM Frogfoot
  • Pax Armata-Themed Cosmetics

Iwo Jima, BF 2042's Next Rumored Map, Hasn't Appeared in a Battlefield Game in Years

The real-world island of Iwo Jima is one of the oldest recurring maps in the Battlefield franchise. It originally debuted in the series' very first installment, Battlefield 1942, and it has since made an appearance in several other entries in the franchise. It has not, however, shown up in a Battlefield game since 2018's Battlefield 5. Therefore, the inclusion of the map in Battlefield 2042's rumored update would mark its first appearance in quite some time.

Despite Its Rough Launch, BF 2042 Has Improved a Lot Lately

While it is not yet clear whether temporyal's rumor will actually come true, EA's supposed decision to release new content for Battlefield 2042 could be a brilliant idea. Although it has understandably gotten a lot of flak from both players and critics, Battlefield 2042 has improved a lot in recent years. The game received seven seasonal updates and a bevy of limited-time events and game modes, as well as some Dead Space- and Mass Effect-inspired crossover cosmetics. EA may deserve criticism for allowing Battlefield 2042 to launch in a buggy and incomplete state, but it's at least commendable that the company didn't abandon the game immediately after its release.

Although EA is, of course, still supporting it, Battlefield 2042 is no longer receiving seasonal updates. The game's seventh and final season, Turning Point, was released on March 19, 2024.

A New BF 2042 Update Could Keep Players Occupied Until BF6 Comes Out

Frankly, with how much of an upgrade its successor appears to be, Battlefield 2042 is probably never going to have the great resurrection that it always needed. Even so, this rumored update for the game could serve as a great way to bridge the two-month gap between Battlefield 6's second open beta weekend and its official launch.

If the leak is legitimate, fans who are already anticipating post-beta depression will hopefully be able to check out new content in Battlefield 2042 and see how much better the game currently is. And, while it may not sate the appetite players have now for Battlefield 6, having more Battlefield content to experience could never be a bad thing.
