Although some fans initially had concerns about the game, Battlefield 6 is shaping up to be just as good as many had hoped it would be. Rather than trying to reinvent the series' formula, like Battlefield 2042 did, the game is taking a more back-to-basics approach with its design philosophy this time. Battlefield 6 has basically all the core staples of a traditional Battlefield game. It has a full-length single-player campaign, a suite of classic multiplayer modes, and a realistic destruction gameplay system, as well as multiple character classes. The game is even going to feature some major new gameplay mechanics, such as a dynamic movement system that lets players lean around corners, brace for impact against cover, and drag fallen players to safety before reviving them.
Battlefield 6 hasn't been officially released yet, but the open betas for the game have proven to be incredibly popular so far. The game managed to attract over 500,000 concurrent players on Steam alone this past weekend, making it the biggest beta in Battlefield history. Although the main multiplayer content in Battlefield 6 is likely going to have a large playerbase at launch, the part of the game that will probably attract the most players is its new battle royale mode.
Battlefield 6 is Going to Have Its Very Own Battle Royale Mode
Shortly after officially revealing the game, EA confirmed in late July that Battlefield 6 would have its very own battle royale side mode, which would seemingly be separate from the base game. Details on this mode are very scarce at the moment, but according to reports from Insider Gaming, it will not only offer a traditional battle royale experience, but it will also feature a secondary competitive game mode called Gauntlet. Unlike the Firestorm mode in Battlefield 5, Battlefield 6's battle royale modes will allegedly be free-to-play. This section of the game isn't available in open beta yet, but, as EA announced a few weeks ago, it will be added to Battlefield Labs in the future.
The Battle Royale Space is Dominated by Games Like Call of Duty: Warzone and Fortnite
It's no secret that battle royale games, especially those of the free-to-play variety, dominate the gaming landscape these days. With titles like Call of Duty: Warzone and Fortnite still breaking player engagement records several years after their initial release, it's not surprising that many companies have attempted to capitalize on their success with battle royale games of their own. Given how saturated the market for this genre currently is, Battlefield 6 is going to face a lot of tough competition with the best battle royale games. Its biggest competitor, however, may not be Call of Duty: Warzone and Fortnite, but rather PUBG: Battlegrounds.
PUBG: Battlegrounds Will Easily Be Battlefield 6's Biggest Competitor
Although it may not be as much in the spotlight as it once was, PUBG's popularity is often understated by players. The game was basically the progenitor of the entire battle royale genre, and it's still one of the most played live service games on the market. PUBG: Battlegrounds is available on nearly all current-gen systems (excluding Nintendo consoles), but the platform that it's most successful on is probably PC. In just the last 24 hours, the game had over 660k concurrent players on Steam, which is roughly 100k more than the number of players that Battlefield 6's open beta had at its all-time peak.
The fact that PUBG: Battlegrounds has managed to maintain these ridiculously high player counts nearly a decade after its 2017 debut is not only a testament to PUBG Studios' ability to release consistently quality content for the game, but it's also a sign of just how serious the competition for Battlefield 6 is going to be. In order for Battlefield 6 to reach over 100 million players, as EA reportedly expects it to do, the game's developers need to ensure, above all else, that its free-to-play battle royale mode launches in a functional state. Otherwise, it could end up dying off in a couple of years, just like Battlefield 5's firestorm mode and the ill-fated Battlefield 2042.
