A developer working on Battlefield 6 confirmed that players in the upcoming open beta test will be able to play with class-locked and open weapons systems. As the next game in the beloved Battlefield franchise and the first mainline title since 2021's Battlefield 2042, Battlefield 6 is currently in testing, with a release window expected to be announced soon.

Though it still doesn't have an officially revealed release date, Battlefield 6 has already seen some major announcements from EA. The publisher confirmed that the official Battlefield 6 reveal trailer will debut on July 24, 2025, confirming the game's official title and theme. That said, a fair amount is already known about Battlefield 6 thanks to the extensive testing EA has done alongside the player community via the Battlefield Labs testing program, and the reveal may just be a way of confirming what's already rumored. Those rumors include news of a number of changes from what could be regarded as Battlefield franchise tradition.

One more contentious change is the Battlefield 6 class system, which eschews class-locked weapons to encourage freer choice for players regardless of their combat role. However, according to a Twitter post from Battlefield 6 Lead Producer David Sirland, Battlefield Studios will be giving players the option of playing with class-locked weapons and the new open weapon system during the game's upcoming open beta test. The choice will come in the form of an official playlist option, with one playlist using closed weapons and the other using open weapons. The open weapons playlist will function as previously detailed in community updates, with players of any class being allowed to choose any weapon type they wish. The closed weapons playlist will restrict a class' Signature Weapons to players with that class. For example, in the closed weapons playlist, only Assault players will be able to pick Assault Rifles, and only Recon players will be able to pick Sniper Rifles.

Battlefield 6 Open Beta Will Let Players Choose Between Class-Locked and Open Weapons

  • Assault Rifles locked to Assault Class
  • Submachine Guns locked to Engineer Class
  • Light Machine Guns locked to Support Class
  • Sniper Rifles locked to Recon Class
  • Designated Marksman Rifles, Shotguns, Carbines not locked, can be picked by any class

Based on Sirland's post, the closed weapons system playlist option will restrict Signature Weapon types to their respective classes, but will have some weapons be universal for any player. These universal weapons include carbines, shotguns, and DMRs (Designated Marksman Rifle, a subtype of sniper rifle). At first glance, this system appears to be similar to the system used in Battlefield 4. Given that Battlefield 4 is one of the best-loved Battlefield games in the series, such a choice will be familiar to players who skipped out on the World War 2-themed Battlefield V and the less well-regarded 2042.

That said, EA hasn't yet said if it will commit to rolling back open weapons for Battlefield 6 beyond the open beta. The choice is likely a way for Battlefield Studios to gather player data and see what the community truly prefers, or how closed weapons might impact its intentions for the game's multiplayer experience. Either way, players who'd like to try either system should look forward to the test.
