One Battlefield 6 fan with an eye for the artistic has released a critique of the color correction techniques used in the four maps players have already had access to and how they could affect players' experiences in the game's various environments. The Battlefield franchise has a long history of adjusting the color balance of the world to fit individual games' themes, and Battlefield 6 seems to be no exception.
Early players have had two weekends to dive into Battlefield 6 open beta sessions in August, ahead of the game's planned release on October 10. With free access to four of the game's nine maps, the sessions have shown that a lot of players are ready to check out Battlefield 6, having reportedly logged more than 92 million hours of playtime across just six days of access.
Battlefield 6 Settings Change Can Make All the Difference
This Battlefield 6 settings change could be a literal game-changer for many players out there.
Battlefield 6's Color Filters Could Affect Players' Enjoyment
While players have been showing their appreciation for Battlefield 6's destruction system and its diversity of game modes, at least one player has honed in on the color correction in the game's visuals as one aspect that developers could still improve upon. YouTube channel Vic's Corner has issued a critique of each of the four Battlefield 6 maps used in the open beta, finding that the hard color grading of some past games seems to have made a return. The YouTuber's commentary isn't all negative, congratulating the developers for providing a true-to-film experience with features like two-part toning, which lets them color shadows and highlights differently, but he indicates that the use of shading is still pretty heavy-handed compared to games like 2016's Battlefield 1.
Breaking down the previously played maps one by one, the player feels Liberation Peak is largely responsible for what he sees as the color grading problem, noting that the high contrast used makes darker sections of the map get "completely crushed," with the graphical elements of Battlefield 6 visually bleeding into one another. The warm tones and purple-tinted shadows of Siege of Cairo are sensible for a sunny Egyptian setting, but removing the color filter adds vibrancy to soldiers, the sky, and other elements that match Battlefield 1's aesthetic, which is a complaint he also applies to Iberian Offensive. The player has an appreciation for Empire State's variation of filters based on location, including an orange hue when around burning vehicles, but he believes reducing the color saturation could draw more attention to its positive traits.
While players in general seem to have enjoyed their time playing so far, there could still be potential for alterations to the game's visuals before the game's launch if enough players become vocal about it. The development team has already announced some changes to Battlefield 6 based on feedback from the open beta, including adding tap-fire characteristics to all weapons, reducing players' ability to jump several times in succession, and re-tuning parachute physics, showing that the team at Battlefield Studio is receptive to what fans want to see in the game.
