Turning off crossplay in Battlefield 6 will only allow players to match up with users on the same platform, according to a clarification by EA. While the Battlefield 6 publisher originally stated that console users who turn crossplay off could keep playing with PlayStation and Xbox players only, that will not be the case once the game goes live on October 10.
Crossplay in Battlefield 6 is one of the key features of the upcoming shooter. While crossplay is optional, activating it will allow Battlefield 6 matches to fill up at a faster pace due to the increased pool of available players. By comparison, turning it off will both decrease the available player count and affect queue times. Opting into Battlefield 6's crossplay mode can only be done by console players, meaning PC players will always have crossplay on by default. Additionally, an active membership to PSN or Xbox Game Pass will be necessary for online multiplayer matches when playing on consoles.

EA Clarifies Battlefield 6 Crossplay Functionality
With just over three weeks to go until Battlefield 6 hits store shelves, the game's crossplay functionality received an important clarification for players to bear in mind. As reported by Dexerto, EA stated that console-only crossplay for Battlefield 6 will not be a thing despite a previous statement. However, other console players will be prioritized over PC players when filling out the matchmaking pool for Battlefield 6's various maps. Turning it off will keep selections restricted to PlayStation-only or Xbox-only player pools, rather than just leaving PC players out. The new report contradicts a previous statement by Matthew Nickerson of Ripple Effect, who stated that PlayStation players could play with Xbox players even if Battlefield 6's crossplay was turned off. Despite the misconception, crossplay remains an optional feature for Battlefield 6 players on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S to utilize.
The main reason that crossplay remains contentious between console and PC players for shooters like Battlefield 6 is due to the options that PC players have. Between utilizing a keyboard and mouse, having access to potentially more powerful hardware, and the ability to utilize cheats that go against the game's terms of service, PC players have inherent advantages over their console counterparts.
However, EA and the Battlefield 6 development team have continued utilizing ways to combat cheating and limit the inevitable impact it will have on the game's multiplayer systems. With rumors circulating that Battlefield 6 could have a separate Battle Royale game client, it remains to be seen if similar crossplay options will be available there.
