Crossplay multiplayer in Battlefield 6 will reportedly be an optional feature, as one reputable leaker claims that players will be able to switch it on and off. If true, this means that Battlefield 6 players on PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S won't be forced to go head-to-head against opponents on PC if they don't want to, and EA may have some extra plans for those who keep it turned on.

Although its launch is still a couple of months away, set for October 10, Battlefield 6 is already off to a flying start as far as pre-sale orders are concerned. The upcoming FPS game is reportedly sitting in the number-one spot for sales on both the Steam and PlayStation 5 charts despite the obvious competition posed by Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, which is also slated for release before the end of 2025.

Battlefield 6 Reportedly Won't Make Console and PC Players Compete through Crossplay

EA pleased potential Battlefield 6 players on Steam by announcing that they will not need to launch the EA app in order to access the game, though they will still need to be registered with an EA account. There was no official confirmation of crossplay in that announcement, but new information shared by CharlieIntel on Twitter claims that crossplay will be included, though not mandatory, allowing those who want to switch it off the option to do so.

The report from CharlieIntel also states that for those who wish to keep crossplay turned on in Battlefield 6, the development team is cooking up something special to keep the playing field level. Reportedly, the matchmaking system will prioritize placing console players with other console players and will only add PC players to console-heavy lobbies when a vacancy arises. While allowing players across multiple platforms to compete together builds a bigger sense of community within a game, games featuring crossplay have held one big downside in the advantages provided by a PC's versatility, as the precise nature of mouse-and-keyboard controls and generally higher levels of settings customization can give PC players a leg up on the competition.

Framerate performance can also be an issue that divides PC and console players, and while CharlieIntel could not confirm whether the PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X versions of Battlefield 6 will be able to consistently function at 120 FPS, the report states that the game will feature a performance mode option. An open beta for Battlefield 6 begins on August 7 for early access players, so more information on crossplay may be available at that time.
