Though Battlefield 6 hasn’t kicked off its version of the complex Phantom Program quest just yet, it does have a handful of Easter eggs. BF6’s trophy list is full of fun references, while the Red Markers and Planet Crackers from the Dead Space franchise are mentioned on a shop menu, giving fans a small bit of hope that the series isn’t going back on the shelf. A Bipod Knife can be found in one of the campaign missions, which is a fun nod to Battlefield Friends, while an homage to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is present via some pizzas within a sewer. However, there’s one specific Easter egg that feels like it’s hinting at something more, and if it is, it will be ending a wait that has gone on for nearly a decade and a half. Specifically, BF Studios might just be adding Dino Mode in the near future — though there's a fair bit of an emphasis on that "might."

The History of Battlefield’s Dino Mode Gag

The initial push for Dino Mode can be traced back much further than Battlefield 6, as it finds its origin in the earliest days of the Call of Duty and Battlefield rivalry. In an infamous 4chan post, a supposed Activision representative asked PC users why the original Modern Warfare 2 did not sell as well on PC compared to consoles. As expected, trolls responded to this inquiry, citing a lack of dinosaurs as the reason for the discrepancy. Battlefield developer DICE wasted no time jumping in on this joke, as BF3 was packed with nods to dinosaurs. A campaign character held a dinosaur toy for his son, dinosaur toys could be found throughout BF3’s version of Wake Island, and dino tracks could be spotted on certain maps.

The Battlefield 3 dinosaur toy is referenced at the very start of the BF6 campaign, as players can interact with the toy before they leave their room in the opening mission.

The dinosaur gags truly took on a life of their own, as they have become a fixture of every game in the series. Whether it’s a dinosaur keychain in a car during the BF4 campaign, a roaring dinosaur in a multiplayer map, or hidden fossils in BF5 multiplayer, dinosaur-related secrets have become part of the series’ DNA. Naturally, many fans have pushed for them to be more than just simple jokes, arguing that Battlefield should create a Dino Mode that directly competes with Treyarch’s CoD Zombies.

Various developers have teased such an experience, often jokingly, though the official Battlefield Twitter did ask if players would like to see a Dino Mode way back during BF3’s post-launch season. Additionally, there was hope for a Battlefield 5 Dino Mode due to developers using dino-related gifs to reply to each other, though it turned out that these Tweets were teases for the Pterodactyl Easter egg. With so many rumors and opportunities, many have given up hope that Dino Mode will become a reality, though the latest tease does feel a bit different.

Battlefield 6’s Dino Mode ‘Teaser’ Explained

On the Iberian Offensive multiplayer map in Battlefield 6, players like bccbear have noticed a movie poster for “Battlesaurus.” Normally, this would feel like the usual Battlefield dinosaur gag and would be something that players look at once, laugh about, and never think about again. However, it’s the inclusion of “Spring” at the bottom of the movie poster that feels a bit more deliberate. Sure, real-life movie posters have release dates or windows at the bottom, but if BF Studios was striving for realism, it could have also attached an actual day, month, and year. And if it wasn’t trying to create hype, said date could have been something that already passed. Simply writing “Spring” feels like a hint at content coming that will be coming during that window, and such a teaser would make perfect sense given how BF6 is a live-service game. In fact, it’s even possible to narrow down when Dino Mode could come, if that’s indeed what is being teased here.

Battlefield 6’s hypothetical Dino Mode would be a natural fit for Season 3, which will likely begin around April 14.

Currently, fans lack an end date for the game’s inaugural season, though based on when Battlefield 6’s first roadmap ends, it will likely be in mid-late January. If BF6 is following a typical 12-week season format used by several live service titles, January 20 will be the end date. Spring starts in March, so Dino could theoretically be a late BF6 seasonal event for Season 2, but it’s been talked about for so long that it feels like something that would headline a Season and be the main theme for all the cosmetics. With this in mind, Battlefield 6’s hypothetical Dino Mode would be a natural fit for Season 3, which will likely begin around April 14. To be clear, there is no guarantee that such a mode is coming, as this poster could very well be another tease that goes nowhere. Players shouldn’t get too excited until there’s an official announcement made, even if the vague Spring mention feels quite deliberate.

Though DICE was always content to limit its usage of dinosaurs to cool Megalodon Easter eggs, dog tag designs, and cosmetics, perhaps Battlefield Studios will finally pull the trigger on the concept of Dino Mode next year. With multiple teams working on the franchise now, there was room to create Battlefield RedSec, so perhaps there will also be enough resources available to make dinosaurs combatants instead of just having them lurk in the background. Whether this potential mode would be objective-based or round-based is anyone’s guess, and what prehistoric creatures would be fought is also open to speculation. No matter what form it took, though, it would undoubtedly be interesting to see one of Battlefield’s longest-running memes turned into a PvE staple. After all, CoD Zombies has become a juggernaut despite its humble beginnings, with the concept for the mode seeming ridiculous back in 2008. If that can work as well as it has, then battling a T-Rex in a tank may turn out to be as fun as it is absurd.
