Battlefield 6 will officially allow players to choose which content they want to install on their console or PC, giving users more control over how much storage space the upcoming shooter will occupy. According to the Battlefield 6 Steam page, it is recommended that players have at least 80 GB of storage space free for the game's installation, but its handy quality-of-life feature means players can install the modes they want to play, which will take up much less storage space.
With AAA video games becoming increasingly advanced, they often require 100 GB or more of storage space, depending on the level of optimization. Battlefield competitor Call of Duty has often found itself riddled with controversy due to its large file size. While Activision has worked to reduce the overall file size in recent updates, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 required 145 GB of free space on some platforms, which is an astonishingly high number considering consoles often come with only 1 TB of storage space.
Why Battlefield 6's 'Console First' Agenda Seems Controversial on Paper, But is It Really?
Battlefield 6 taking a console-first approach may be surprising to hear, but it ultimately makes the most sense in the long run.
Battlefield 6 Will Let Players Choose Which Content to Install
One way Call of Duty has attempted to combat backlash due to its large file size is by allowing players to choose exactly which content to install. Instead of uninstalling the entire game, users could choose to uninstall the single-player campaign after they have completed it, for example. Now it looks like Battlefield 6 is going to give players the same freedom, as those currently testing the game in Battlefield Labs have discovered that the upcoming shooter will allow players to choose six different elements to install: multiplayer, multiplayer markers, campaign, multiplayer high-resolution textures, multiplayer markers high-resolution textures, and campaign high-resolution textures.
There doesn't appear to be any mention of Battlefield 6's new Battle Royale mode in the storage settings, but it's possible that it will be updated by the time the mode is released. Publisher EA has yet to reveal when the mode will be released, but a recent rumor claimed that it won't launch alongside the title on October 10. Thankfully, if the leak is to be believed, fans won't have to wait long, as Battlefield 6's Battle Royale mode is rumored to release on October 28, just a little over two weeks after launch.
If the rumor is to be believed and Battlefield 6's Battle Royale mode is launching before the beginning of November, it will have a great head start over its biggest competitor, Call of Duty. The two series will be going head-to-head for the first time in four years, as Activision is gearing up to release Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 on November 14, just one month after EA is set to launch Battlefield 6 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
