Summary

  • Playtests for the next Battlefield game are reportedly ramping up and are some of the biggest in the franchise's history.
  • EA is rumored to have some "big announcements" surrounding the next Battlefield in the coming months.
  • Battlefield 2042 launched to massively negative reviews in 2021, which is likely why EA has ramped up playtests for the next title.

A new report from an industry insider suggests playtests for the next Battlefield game are "ramping up" with some big announcements expected from EA in the coming months. The next Battlefield game, which is currently being referred to as Battlefield 6 by most fans, was announced by EA back in September 2023, with the studio reportedly holding massive playtests for the upcoming shooter to ensure it does not meet the same fate as recent entries in the series.

When it comes to first-person shooters, it doesn't get much bigger than Battlefield and Call of Duty. While both titles have had their ups and downs over the years, EA took a huge hit in 2021 when Battlefield 2042 was released to massively negative reviews. Fans blasted the series' latest entry as a step back for the franchise, with missing core features from previous games, poor optimization, bugs, and more. While EA remained committed to the title and has managed to claw its way to a "mixed" review rating on Steam thanks to numerous updates, the studio is apparently taking the relevant steps with its next title to ensure a similar incident doesn't occur.

The Battlefield franchise has no shortage of iconic maps, and Battlefield 6 should bring at least a few of them back into the spotlight.

Battlefield 6 Reportedly Undergoing Massive Playtests

With development on the title ramping up, 2025 is shaping up to be a big year for Battlefield fans. According to an updated report from Insider Gaming's Tom Henderson, EA is once again ramping up playtests for the next Battlefield game as the studio is reportedly preparing to make some "big announcements" in the coming months. There was no word from Henderson on what these announcements could be, but with official concept art already being revealed last year, there's hope that the community could receive some screenshots or possibly even a first trailer. For now, however, that remains simply speculation.

Back in November 2024, Insider Gaming reported that playtests for the next Battlefield were underway. While Henderson has since updated the report on January 24 to state that even more playtests were underway, it was claimed that playtests with external players are "happening much more frequently" than past installments, with the amount of data and feedback collected being the most in franchise's history. Although the Battlefield series is often considered to be one of the best franchises in the first-person shooter genre, with titles such as Battlefield: Bad Company 2 and Battlefield 3 being critically acclaimed, recent entries have been a huge miss, which is likely why EA is heavily committed to fan feedback and playtests.

There's hope among the community that the next Battlefield game will be a return to form, and while that will be decided by fans when the game launches, EA has already attempted to hype fans up for the title in the past. Back in August 2024, EA CEO Andrew Wilson briefly touched on the next Battlefield game and said it was one of the studio's top priorities and is also "one of the most ambitious projects in [EA's] history." Unfortunately, there's no official word on when fans will get their first glimpse at the shooter, but with "big announcements" rumored for the coming months, fans might not have to wait long.
