Battlefield 6 lets players create custom experiences of their own through Portal, a powerful editing tool that grants players an unprecedented amount of freedom when it comes to making personalized game modes. Such modes can range from simple PvE battles against bots to a wide variety of party modes like infection, survival, tower defense, and more.

Setting up a custom Portal server can be a little intimidating, but everyone can try tinkering with it if they want to learn. In this guide, we'll be going over how to make Portal games in Battlefield 6, including how to host servers and how to make your own custom game mode.

BF6 Portal Experience Browser

First, go to the main menu, then select the Community option at the bottom-left side of your screen, right above the Training Grounds option. This will flick the UI to the Portal section, and from there, you can choose between an Experience browser or a server browser. The Experience searcher lets you pick and choose from game modes published by players or Battlefield Studios. Meanwhile, the server browser will let you choose from any online Portal game.

Find and pick an Experience from either of the browsers, then select the Host button. You'll be able to change your Portal server's info on the screen that appears, including an optional password that you can use to make private lobbies. Private servers with bots is an excellent way to farm XP in Battlefield 6.

Here's where things get a little tricky. You can't make custom modes in-game. Instead, you need to go to the official Battlefield Portal website. Login to your account, then click the Create New button to get started.

Custom vs Verified Modes

You can pick between making a BF6 Portal mode using either Custom or Verified rulesets:

  • The Custom ruleset option gives you complete freedom over what things happen when conditions are met.
  • The Verified ruleset lets you pick between official game modes like Breakthrough and Conquest.

Players can create modified versions of existing BF6 game modes by picking one of them from the Verified menu and fiddling with the settings there. From the new screen that appears, you can modify things like player count, bot count, map rotation, weapon restrictions and more. It's a fairly straightorward system that feels much like creating a custom match in other games.

Rule Editor

Making a fully-custom game mode in Battlefield 6 is much more complicated. Instead of picking from an existing mode, you'll be making your own, which means making use of Portal's Rule Editor to create scripts.

The Blocks tab lets you create a rule script by dragging and dropping blocks onto a workspace. It can be pretty complicated and overwhelming, but just know that it follows a simple logical flow involving an Event Context, a Condition, and an Action.

The Event Context refers to a specified event that is happening or has happened in-game, such as when an MCOM is destroyed or when a control point is captured. Condition refers to the variables that the game will check before it triggers Action blocks. For example, in the image above, the rule we wrote will heal players 100 points of health and restore their current ammo and ammo reserves back to full whenever a player scores a kill.

Right-click on a block and select the Help option to view what it does.

Unfortunately, there aren't any official documents explaining the intricacies of the Portal Rule Editor, and without prior knowledge of how Portal rule editing works, trial-and-error testing would be the way to go. Also, if you want to set up objectives, spawn points, and other map-related details, you need to use the SDK tool.

You can test your Custom modes even if they haven't been verified yet. Just go back to BF6 and look for your new mode under the My Experiences menu.

Verified modes are much simpler to set up. These contain a comprehensive list of every variable available in the game by default, including soldier health, weapon damage, and even projectile speed. The Portal Builder will lead you on a category-by-category guide that'll cover every setting available, so take your time to check things out. Settings include:

  • Mode Settings include options affecting objectives, reinforcement counts, and match time.
  • Map Rotation is where you pick which BF6 maps your Portal server will feature. You can pick as many as you'd like.
  • Teams lets you control the number of bot and human players in a match.
  • The Modifiers tab contains many categories that each control different aspect of the game, such as friendly fire, soldier health, and bot behaviors.
  • Restrictions is where you control what types of weapons, gadgets, or classes can be played in your Portal server.

Verified Portal Experiences usually reward Full XP, while Custom ones reward only limited XP. Verified modes will also let you progress challenges and unlock Masteries.

Publishing Your Portal Mode in Battlefield 6

Once you've set everything up, you'll then need to publish your Portal mode before you can play it. Select the Publish tab on the left side of the screen, then fill up the text boxes that appear. Enter your mode's name and a brief description of your Portal Experience, then pick an image that represents your game mode.

The next screen will let you review your Experience info. If everything seems right to you, Save your Experience, then click the Submit to Publishing button. If you made a customized mode using a Verified rule set, you'll be able to play it immediately. However, if you made one using a Custom rule set, it will take three hours before you can try it out.

You can play your Portal Experiences in Battlefield 6 by going back to the Experiences/Projects page and selecting the triple dot icon on your published Portal modes. Click on the Share option to find your mode's Experience Code — go to the Search Experiences menu in Battlefield 6, then enter your code there.

What Does Game Quota Exceeded Error Mean in Battlefield 6?

Simply put, you'll get this error when there are too many active Portal servers in Battlefield 6. You won't be able to host your own server because the game simply cannot support any more of them. There's currently no way to work around this, but you can try either playing during low traffic hours, or you can just spam the Host button over and over again until it works.

This shouldn't be an issue if you're hosting a Portal server locally. However, you can only locally host Experiences made with Custom rule sets.
