Battlefield 6 is proving to be a true return to form for the franchise, as it checks numerous items off the community’s wish list following the poorly received Battlefield 2042. BF6’s strong reviews are likely a direct result of listening to players, as the list of positives ranges from stellar destruction and smooth gunplay to rewarding class play and a deep pool of content. Still, there are nitpicks that have to be addressed. Players aren’t happy with Battlefield 6’s UI, its map pool remains divisive, and for me, it doesn’t commit nearly enough to the tried and true method of PTFO.
In my eyes, Battlefield’s main draw has never been the vehicles, huge player counts, or satisfying sniping (though that final trait is certainly something I appreciate). Instead, it’s the culture around playing the objective that I adore. As one of the only people who cares about winning in games like Call of Duty, it’s refreshing seeing players enter team chat with some motivating messages to push the point or strategies on how to hold the line. I fully expected Battlefield 6 to double down on encouraging PTFO given its use of the community phrase as a hashtag in marketing material and social media posts, but oddly enough, I feel like it’s actually discouraging it a bit via some questionable in-game decisions.
Battlefield 6 Prioritizes CoD Players’ Favorite Stat While Downplaying Others
One of the reasons for the community’s concern regarding Battlefield 6’s smaller maps has been that BF Studios is trying to cater to lapsed Call of Duty fans instead of OG players, and though Season 1 will be expanding the large map count, the target audience concerns can be felt elsewhere. Specifically, if players check their stats within the main menu, they’ll find their total score, total revives, and kills. They’ll also see their K/D ratio on clear display, something that Battlefield fans traditionally don’t worry all that much about, as winning and having fun are always the priority. This stats page also shows class preference and some career best stats, yet, for some reason, there is nothing whatsoever related to wins and losses.
Battlefield 6 fans don’t see their win or loss count in this tab, and on top of that, there’s no win/loss ratio pictured either. This is truly strange given how important the mantra of PTFO has been to Battlefield’s legacy, as one would think displaying a player’s wins and losses would be prioritized over everything else when tracking Battlefield 6 stats. It goes beyond this issue, too, as the career stats page doesn’t show flag captures, M-COM destructions from Rush mode, or Breakthrough Zones secured, either. And on top of all these missing stats, the in-game scoreboard has a glaring omission as well.
During Battlefield 6 matches, players may want to check the scoreboard to see how much score they’ve racked up. Thankfully, they can do just that, as the scoreboard isn’t a post-launch addition like it was in the critically panned Battlefield 2042. However, when they do so, they’ll only see the following categories:
- Scores
- Kills
- Deaths
- Assists
- Objectives
Supports will likely realize sooner rather than later that revives aren’t pictured on the BF6 scoreboard. This design choice ignores how some players make it a habit to top the scoreboard by getting tons of revives and few eliminations, essentially becoming pacifist medics like Desmond Doss from Hacksaw Ridge. And though Battlefield 6 properly scores that heroism, unlike how CoD gives players little appreciation for playing the objective in modes like Hardpoint, the lack of revives on the scoreboard feels like mixed messaging. Just as kill-hungry players will want to know how big their body count is, medics will want to know how many people they’ve rescued from death, and they should be able to see it at all times.
Battlefield 6’s drag and revive mechanic and the ability for squadmates to pick each other up regardless of class naturally encourage more revives. It only makes sense, then, for the scoreboard to do the same.
Battlefield 6’s Lackluster PTFO Vibes Can Easily Be Fixed
Fortunately, this Battlefield 6 problem doesn’t have to last, as BF Studios has already promised tons of content in the game's seasons. A scoreboard overhaul to add a revive section isn’t a massive ask, and the same can likely be said for a deeper stats page that highlights objective play and a player's win/loss stats. Changes to the stats tab could go even further than that, too, as individual weapon stats and performance data could be introduced so that players can see exactly where they excel and what areas they have to work on improving. While revives not being on the scoreboard and win/loss stats missing from the main menu are ultimately small complaints, they are still things that will hopefully be touched on down the road, as Battlefield 6 should be doing all it can to encourage selfish players to do more of their fighting on the objective.
