Battlefield 6 is expected to shake up the battle royale genre later this year when the highly-anticipated first-person shooter debuts. The hype surrounding Battlefield 6 is continuing to grow, especially with the success of its ongoing open beta, and while many are excited about its battle royale mode, fans of the genre also recently got bad news, as well.
It was recently announced by developer PUBG Studios that support for PUBG on PS4 and Xbox One will be ending on November 13. This marks the end of an era for the beloved battle royale title, and as the game's time on PS4 and Xbox One grows shorter and shorter, those who still play it on these last-gen consoles will be forced to make a major decision.
PUBG Ending its PS4 and Xbox One Support Could Rattle its Player Base, But Battlefield 6's Launch Introduces a Fresh Offering
It's currently unclear if Battlefield 6's Battle Royale mode will be available on launch day or later down the road.
Some PUBG Players Will Have to Embrace Current Gen Consoles
It's been five years since the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S hit the scene. Due to supply issues caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S era didn't feel like it was fully underway until around 2021 or 2022, though. Because of these supply problems, some gamers held off on purchasing, and over time, many were happy sticking to last-gen models. With plenty of games still launching cross-gen, it only made sense to keep old consoles, as it was a huge money-saver. However, many developers are now beginning to solely focus on current gen hardware.
This is the natural evolution of things. With both consoles being five years old, it's time that developers made the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S their central priorities. Also, with speculation about the PS6 and next version of the Xbox circulating, the current-gen offerings are in need of some exclusivity. This is bound to be frustrating for PUBG players who have not yet purchased a current-gen product, but November 13 will force some to finally make the leap.
Rumors have suggested that the next-gen Xbox could be 20% more powerful than the PS6, but this remains to be seen.
Battlefield 6 is an Exciting New Offering, But Last-Gen Gamers Still Face the Same Crossroads
- Battlefield 6 will only be available for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
This is a surprising move from Activision, especially when the publisher has huge ambitions for Battlefield 6. So, for last-gen battle royale players who have been looking forward to Battlefield 6, the arrival of the game presents the same dilemma that PUBG eventually will.
This transition can be frustrating, because as products become more and more expensive, having to drop money for a fresh console is not always accessible for some. However, it's also time for the industry to make PS5 and Xbox Series X/S consoles the standard and not just an additional platform. With both titles embracing current gen platforms, Battlefield 6 and PUBG could prove to be fascinating competitors this fall.
Battlefield 6 is expected to launch on October 10, 2025.
PUBG and Battlefield 6 Are Bringing Battle Royale Fans a One-Two Punch
Even though some may be frustrated that the two games are no longer holding onto the past, it's exciting that the current gen is finally beginning to feel like it's fully in the spotlight. A worldwide pandemic threw a wrench into the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S's plans, as it not only halted supplies, but slowed down development on projects, as well. The journey of the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S has been slow, but PUBG and Battlefield 6 making a point to focus on these platforms is a thrilling step forward.
