Battlefield 6 is hot off the reveal of its multiplayer via a big livestream event that is ongoing with coverage from a streamer showcase and a ton of content creators. Ubiquitously being described as ‘Battlefield being back,’ it would appear as if this reveal has gone swimmingly for excited parties who’ve adored the franchise and are eager to learn more about this upcoming installment, which boasts multiple Open Beta weekends in August and officially launches on October 10. Moreover, the Battlefield 6 gameplay footage airing today demonstrates an impressive level of graphical fidelity, as well as stunning environmental destruction.
This is all well and good for Battlefield 6. But, while one EA, DICE, and Motive franchise is flourishing, another is submerged in a frozen lake and desperately attempting to locate the hole it fell in through. Indeed, the Star Wars Battlefront series seems confined to a slab of carbonite at the moment, and it hasn’t even been egregious for EA and DICE to keep their distance for as long as they have. Star Wars Battlefront 2 has had its fair share of polarizing controversy and, at least for the last several years since post-launch support and development had ceased, it seemed like a miracle would be needed to repair its image. Now, hype mounting for a hypothetical Star Wars Battlefront 3 couldn’t be greater, and, if it looked anything like Battlefield 6, it could be a staggering achievement.
A Star Wars Battlefront 3 Has the Weight of a Galaxy on Its Shoulders
If a Star Wars Battlefront 3 was born of the series' recent hype, it would hopefully lean on every bit of Star Wars lore and iconography possible.
Star Wars Battlefront 3 is a Pipe Dream, But a Hotly Desired One
For one arbitrary, random reason or another, the ‘Star Wars Battlefront’ name is spoken in a much higher regard today than it was even a couple of years ago. Star Wars Battlefront 2 was always fun to play, to be fair, whether or not players preferred its predecessor’s open-ended freedom of customization and gameplay or its own rigid, class- and character-oriented builds. However, months ago, it received a massive surge of attention that assisted in demolishing concurrent Star Wars Battlefront 2 player count records on Steam, complemented exponentially by big names chiming in with their support for a new Star Wars Battlefront game:
- Andor: A Star Wars Story’s Muhannad Ben Amor.
- Star Wars Battlefront developers such as producer Mats Helge Holm, creative director Dennis Brännvall, and lead animator Harvey Newman.
- Star Wars Battlefront 2 actors such as Iden Versio’s Janina Gavankar, Admiral Garrick Versio’s Anthony Skordi, and Del Meeko’s TJ Ramini.
Battlefield 6 is a Sore Reminder of No Star Wars Battlefront 3
A Star Wars Battlefront 3 with Battlefield 6’s environmental destruction, visuals, and sound design would be fantastic, evolving beautifully from how immersive and gripping Star Wars Battlefront 2 is. Sadly, none of this guarantees that a Star Wars Battlefront 3 will spawn out of thin air.
Remarkably high player counts are surely terrific for Star Wars Battlefront 2 in their own right, but flash-in-a-pan limelights, no matter how loud, won’t necessarily be what influences a sequel. Besides, even if these intermittent Star Wars Battlefront renaissances did stir enough arousal to convince EA and DICE to commit efforts toward a third installment and begin working on it in the near future, that entry wouldn’t be seen or heard from in quite a long while.
It’s not its fault, but Battlefield 6’s multiplayer reveal and enveloping excitement today are a grim reminder to a corner of the studio and publisher’s fanbase that Star Wars Battlefront’s franchise isn’t nearly as prosperous or hopeful. Things could always change and a surprise or two may be in store down the road, yet Star Wars Battlefront 2’s recent popularity might ultimately be all that amounts to, and that’d be a shame considering how arresting and optimistic Battlefield’s future is.
