The first open beta weekend for Battlefield 6 is officially in the books, and it's already been a massive success. While fans of the series are finding very little to complain about, there does seem to be a general consensus that Battlefield 6 shares a serious flaw with Call of Duty: both games have a "trash" UI, according to fans.
It might not affect a title's gameplay, but a sleek and user-friendly menu interface is something gamers are extremely passionate about. Unfortunately, Call of Duty fans have been campaigning for Activision to go back to the series' classic UI for years now, after 2022's Modern Warfare 2 implemented some controversial changes. Since then, each entry in the series has brought about plenty of questionable design choices, largely to appease Activision's desire for each title to be a part of one central hub known as Call of Duty HQ.
If Battlefield 6 is Going to Thrive, People Really Need to Chill Out About Its Cosmetics
Battlefield fans have already been up in arms about BF6’s skins, but if they want the game to live on for years to come, some compromises are needed.
Battlefield 6 Players Aren't Happy With the Game's UI
Call of Duty did attempt to rectify its UI flaws with a big update before Black Ops 6's official launch, but it continues to draw controversy from players who just want to see the traditional vertical menus return. Now it looks like Battlefield fans are in the same boat, as a new post on the game's subreddit calling out the "trash" UI has accumulated over 12,000 upvotes and over 2,000 comments. The design of Battlefield 6's menus appears to be strikingly similar to Call of Duty, with a "controller-friendly" tile design similar to something you'd see on Netflix or Disney+. It's a trend that seems to be taking over the gaming space, with over titles such as Fortnite also opting for tiles instead of a classic menu design.
The "CODified" Battlefield 6 UI, as Reddit user diluxxen so aptly put it, has left fans frustrated. While many simply labeled the design as "awful," fans were quick to compare the interface to Call of Duty, and not in a good way. Reddit user Evil-Mr-Kibbles said it "looks identical" to the last four Call of Duty games, while Seven-Scars said that the "Netflix-ified" menus could be swapped between games, and fans likely wouldn't even notice the difference. Thankfully, the Battlefield series hasn't gone down the same route as the controversial Call of Duty HQ, but EA needs to be careful if it wants to compete with Activision's powerhouse.
Despite some pretty serious complaints surrounding the game's UI, it looks like this may finally be the year that Battlefield blows Call of Duty out of the water. While the latter has continued to dominate the first-person shooter space for almost two decades now, Battlefield 6's first open beta has already broken records. EA has said that it's the series' biggest open beta ever, which isn't surprising considering it has already overtaken Call of Duty's all-time concurrent player count on Steam. Over the weekend, the Battlefield 6 beta peaked at over 521,000 concurrent players, surpassing the Call of Duty HQ app's (which has multiple titles tied to it, including Warzone) 491,000 peak.
