Battlefield Studios, a collective of four development teams working on Battlefield 6, has reassured fans that the next entry in the series will be a "gritty, realistic shooter" that won't feature "goofy" skins. As Battlefield 6's biggest competitor, Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, has been forced to backtrack on its cosmetic items due to huge backlash, Battlefield Studios seemingly wants its community to be aware that it has no intention of turning into the next Fortnite.

Aside from new Battlefield 2042 updates, the Battlefield franchise has been absent for the last four years. During this time, big changes have occurred, particularly in the realm of cosmetic items and in-game microtransactions. While both are still vital parts of live-service titles, fans have finally had enough of unrealistic skins in what they believed to be grounded first-person shooters. In response to the backlash, Activision has finally backed down and admitted that it has strayed from what made Call of Duty unique, while also making some big changes for the upcoming instalment in the series, Black Ops 7.

Battlefield 6 Devs Want It to Be a "Gritty, Realistic Shooter"

Prior to Activision's recently announced changes, such as its decision to cancel Carry Forward for Black Ops 7, the franchise was receiving a huge amount of backlash for its unrealistic cosmetic items. Now, in a recent interview with IGN, Battlefield Studios has commented on the controversy and reassured fans that it plans to remain a "gritty, realistic shooter." When asked if it felt like its commitment to remaining a grounded shooter was paying off, technical director Christian Buhl said, "Other games can and should be whatever they want to be, right? Fortnite is pretty goofy, and that game is pretty good. So, I think where we end up is we're pretty happy with where we are. We are a gritty, grounded, realistic shooter."

Senior console combat designer Matthew Nickerson also chimed in and said that Battlefield is "aware" of what other products are doing, but says that the studio is focused on what works for Battlefield. "We’re not chasing trends. We’re not chasing other products," the developer said. Nickerson then went on to reference the recent Road to Battlefield 6 Battle Pass in Battlefield 2042, saying it is a "perfect example" of what kind of skins the studio is committed to releasing for the next entry in the series, and described it as a "taste of what's to come."

While the developers have attempted to reassure players that Battlefield 6 skins will be realistic and fit the overall theme of the game, there have still been some concerns raised by fans. Earlier this week, a leaked skin with a neon green lining on a soldier's suit raised some eyebrows among the community. While it's not exactly comparable to Beavis & Butt-Head in Call of Duty, some fans did urge others to "push back" against potential unrealistic skins in Battlefield 6, as they believe that it could be a "slippery slope" to even more outlandish cosmetics.
