If you’re new to gacha games and how they work, it’s always going to be a little confusing at first. Each game has different approaches and Genshin Impact doesn’t fall short of them. As a game that’s been extremely popular since its release in 2020, players are introduced to a variety of system changes and gameplay that newbies may find overwhelming.
Genshin Impact: How To Unlock & Play Co-Op
Playing Genshin Impact with friends in co-op can be a blast, but you'll need to know how to unlock and use the game's co-op mode first.
There’s a lot to do in Genshin Impact and if you don’t know where to start, you can easily get left behind. The game has seven regions and within them are a variety of enemies, puzzles, and story quests to complete. Some of the sub-regions are also locked behind story quests and this can take some time to complete. The process is quite lengthy, so if beginners are looking at where to start and what to do, they can refer to this guide.
8 Farm, Farm, And Farm
Always Pick Up Everything You See
Genshin Impact is essentially a farming grinder game and this means that everything in the game requires materials. Collecting these materials (or loosely termed as farming) is the most important thing. The minute you start the game, grab any material you see that’s available for collecting. You can usually identify them by the gold sparkle. Whether it's flowers, animals, or crystals, make sure to collect them and stock up for future use.
7 Exploration Is Your Best Friend
Open Chests And Complete Puzzles
If you want to raise your Adventure Rank or obtain more primogems, exploration is the best way to do it. Some exploration can take time, but the end result is completely worth it. Furthermore, as you keep leveling up in the game, Genshin Impact offers tools that you can use to grab any hidden chests you missed out on.
6 Build Your Characters
Make Sure Your Character Builds Are Sufficient
Aside from exploration, character building is an important aspect of Genshin Impact. The characters that you obtain play a crucial role in how far you will advance in the game, since they are your main point of contact when it comes to combat. You need characters that are good enough to survive a World Boss or Weekly Boss fight.
Each character works well on a different build and the best way to figure out how to build them is by reading their skills on the talent screen. This will give you an idea of what the character does, what attributes they scale off, and what artifacts best suit them. However, keep in mind that it’s not entirely necessary to build characters if you’re below AR 45. This is because the drop rate for artifacts is not worth it, and it’s more efficient to spend your resin collecting money and character ascension materials. Everything will be fine as long as you can get your character to level 70 and equip them with a weapon.
After reaching AR 45 is when more in-depth character building becomes more necessary. The game offers in-game tips for artifacts and other recommendations, but if you want more in-depth build advice and character development guides, check out our character directory!

5 Don’t Forget To Cook
Cooking Is Essential To Surviving
Although the game has characters which can heal or buff your team, it’s always a good option to have some additional food on the side to help you out. You can unlock a variety of recipes through exploration and quests, which will either give you healing dishes or boosting dishes. It’s recommended to cook healing dishes first before moving onto ATK-boosting or Crit Rate-boosting dishes.

Skills in Genshin Impact are an important factor when it comes to understanding your character and how they work.
4 Team Compositions Are Important
Capitalize On Elemental Reactions
When you first start out in the game, fighting enemies isn’t going to be the easiest if you rely only on Basic Attack DMG. You need to make use of the elemental reactions to defeat your enemies. Genshin Impact gives players four starter characters, including the Traveler. They are your best possible option as a newbie, since mixing Kaeya, Amber, and Lisa’s reactions can deal a lot of damage.
Further on into the game, players will also be given Noelle, Barbara, Xiangling, and Collei for free. They're all great characters that players can mix and match to different effect, so be sure to experiment with what you like best.
As you level up and obtain new characters through the gacha system, make sure to follow the same strategy of sticking to elemental reactions. They may work in your favor.

3 Save Your Primogems
Be Responsible With Gacha Pulling
What many players forget to keep in mind is that Genshin Impact’s gacha system is technically gambling. Players earn primogems through quests and exploration, and use them on the Character Wishing Screen. The gacha system for the game is pretty standard and divided between three types of banners:
- Limited Character Banner
- Limited Weapon Banner
- Standard Banner
The Limited Character and Weapon Banners are only available for a set duration, whereas the Standard Banner is permanent. Each of the banners uses different types of Fates (wishing currency), but they all use Primogems. It’s recommended to save your Primogems for the Limited Character Banner (Intertwined Fates) as those featured characters are only available in limited periods. The way the Genshin Impact pulling pity system works causes players to pull Standard Banner characters on the limited-time banners frequently, so it's best not to spend Primogems on the Standard Banner outright. Basically, all characters that are available on the Standard Banner are also available on the Limited Character Banners, but limited-time characters are only on their own.
There are chances where you might get lucky and win your 50-50 on the Limited Banner, but there is still a 50% chance you may lose and not get the Limited Character. This means you need to leave some room for that possibility and plan your gacha pulling ahead. Make sure to have enough Primogems to avoid spending real money whenever possible.
The pity system sounds complicated, but it's really quite straightforward once you get the hang of it. For more information, check this guide that explains it well:

2 Save Your Original Resin
Don’t Waste Resin Unnecessarily
Resin is your basic resource for claiming rewards in the overworld or domains. It is vital to know that players should usually not use their Resin inside Domains pre-AR45. This is because they will not have access to the highest Domain level and choosing to farm at lower levels will result in lower rarity rewards. This is essentially a waste of resin.
Genshin Impact: The Best Way To Use Your Resin
Here are the many ways Genshin Impact players can spend their daily resin and how to best plan for long-term play.
Instead, lower-level players should use their resin to obtain Mora, Adventure Books, and Character Ascension Materials from World Bosses. You can even farm Talent Books and Weapon Ascension Materials from Domains, but don’t waste too much of your resin on them. Players should also try not to waste the Fragile Resin they have collected. Let the Fragile Resin collect and only use it after Adventure Rank 45 in the Artifact Domains.
1 Don’t Rush & Play
Go At Your Own Pace
Finally, take your time playing and exploring Teyvat. Genshin Impact is not a hard game and there’s no substantial power-creep. Feel free to use whichever character you are comfortable with and complete the quests at your own pace. The story quests are not replayable and, since there’s no real ‘endgame,’ players just wait for new content on each patch update.
