While picking the army you like and customizing them can be fun, everyone will want to win as many games as possible, and much like the tabletop game, there are lots of small things to think about in this RTS. Here are some tricks and tips for those looking to jump in for the first time, no matter what faction you choose to play as.

Resource Management Is Key in Warhammer 40K Dawn of War Definitive Edition

The Player Taking a Strategic Point

Requisition and Power

No matter what resource your faction uses, it's important to make sure production is high right away. If Requisition is your main resource, you'll want to make sure you secure as many Strategic Points right away. Power isn't as tricky as it is easy to build up generators or your power-supplying building in your main base, where it's nice and safe. Early expansion is important, so be sure to use your basic units to try to section off enough of the map to lay the foundations for as much resource gathering as possible.

Capitalize Your Strategic Points

Every faction can also build an additional structure on a Strategic Point, and this should always be done right away. The exact uses for these structures will vary, but all of them either boost resource production and army size, along with just making the strategic point more difficult to steal.

When to Build Units & When to Upgrade

As long as you're not being threatened with annihilation in the next few seconds, it's almost always more worthwhile to use your resources and upgrade your more-used units than just to build new ones. Upgrading units does cost resources, but helps make future units more cost-effective, which will build up throughout the game slowly put you ahead of your opponent.

The Player Renforcing a Squad of Necron Warriors

Increasing Your Squad Sizes

Whenever you build a new squad, one of the first things you should do is add more squad members. While this will end up costing the same as simply building a new squad, this will give you more bodies overall for your total infantry size. If you face an opponent who doesn't prioritize this, you'll win the game off numbers alone. Adding more squad members can also increase your output of total units, as this enforcement happens at the squad level and doesn't require any building to make those new units.

Leaders & Upgrades

Many squads can get leader units attached to them, especially any Space Marine chapter, offering various buffs along with just a stronger unit in the squad. Many units can also have individual upgrades that happen in the squad menu when selecting them, such as buying heavier weapons. These upgraded weapons and leaders will lead to very elite squads, which, yes, will cost more but will dominate squads without similar upgrades. Focus on building a squad and upgrading them as much as possible instead of producing a bunch of weak squads.

How to Win in Warhammer 40K Dawn of War Definitive Edition

The Take and Hold Victory Screen

Play the Mission

Winning a game in Dawn of War doesn't mean killing all your enemies, but taking and holding objectives. Orange dots on the mini-map represent Critical Locations, which act a lot like Strategic Locations but have a lot more weight in the overall game. If one side takes a holds a majority of the Critical Locations in the game for seven minutes, they win the game no matter what enemies are left. Remember that your ultimate goal is to win, not just kill your enemy, so prioritize taking Critical Locations as this is much more achievable than wiping out all enemy structures and units.

Trees giving the Light Cover bonus

Take Cover

Light cover is way more important than you may think. Infantry can take advantage of cover by standing among trees or other terrain elements that have the light cover mark. While in light cover, units take less ranged damage, which further benefits your units as long as they have proper upgrades and a full squad. Never move along the main roads on a map, and instead always stick to the tree line to help give your units the upper hand in any fight.
