9 Black Bullet
Set in Japan, Black Bullet is a post-apocalyptic anime that revolves around humanity and its battle against Gastrea, a virus that infects humans and turns them into monsters. This virus is passed through bodily fluids and can only be destroyed with Varanium, a form of metal.
The fate of humanity lies in the hands of the cursed children; these are female kids born by mothers who were infected by Gastrea during pregnancy. The virus gives them superhuman abilities and distinct red eyes. The protagonist, Satomi Rentoro, who is devoted to killing Gastrea bugs after they killed his parents, is paired up with Enju Aihara, a cursed child, to fight against Gastrea.
8 Yuyushiki
Yuyushiki is a slice-of-life anime that tells the story of three girls while also presenting a cute aesthetic about it. Yuzuko, Yukari, and Yui are high schoolers who join their school’s Data Processing Club after finding out it has no members. They spend their time having ridiculous conversations and doing research for their club.
Fans are particularly drawn to the laid-back atmosphere of Yuyushiki and the simplistic plot that shows the daily lives of these three school girls. The character designs are adorable too.
7 Is The Order A Rabbit?
As a slice-of-life anime, Is The Order A Rabbit? Brings along with it a breath of fresh air while detailing the lives of Kokoa and her friends. After joining the Rabbit Café in return for staying with the Kafuu family so she could attend her high school, Kokoa makes new friends: Rize, Chino, Chiya, and Sharo.
With her friendly nature, Kokoa and her friends’ daily adventures are detailed in the Is The Order A Rabbit? Anime. As the days go by, Kokoa works at the Rabbit Café while also having fun with her new friends and day-to-day activities.
6 The Rising Of The Shield Hero
The Rising of the Shield Hero tells the story of how Naofumi and three others were summoned to an alternative universe to become heroes and ultimately save the kingdom, Kingdom of Melromarc from destruction. Naofumi was made the shield hero, the weakest of all four heroes.
Naofumi became a shadow of his true self as a result of the Princess of Melromarc's false accusations and the populace's hatred for him. He then resolved to exact revenge on those who had betrayed him by establishing his reputation and strengthening himself.
5 Tokyo Magnitude 8.0
As the recipient of the Excellence Award at the 13th Japan Media Arts Festival, a lot of good things can be said about this show. Grounded in realism, Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 tells the story of what will happen if an 8.0 earthquake hits Tokyo, Japan, from 25 kilometers under the sea. This anime is quite tragic, but it is praised for being realistic, with a simplistic storyline and characters that drive the story.
Devastation strikes as Mirai and her brother Yuuki are trapped in the middle of an earthquake. Alone and far from home, these two kids are helpless, as they cannot navigate through the disaster without help. In the midst of the chaos, they encounter Mari, a female motorcyclist who is determined to reunite the young kids with their parents.
4 My Happy Marriage
Premiered in July 2023, My Happy Marriage is regarded as a Japanese Cinderella, but better. Born into a family of psychics, Miyo was treated like an outcast because she was born without any psychic abilities. The death of her mother only made matters worse, as she was treated like garbage by her stepmother and her daughter.
My Happy Marriage takes viewers on Miyo’s journey to heal her trauma and insecurities after she gets arranged to wed Kiyoka, a cruel military captain who, contrary to what people say, is actually a kind-hearted and sweet man.
3 Barakamon
Barakamon tells the story of a young calligrapher who cannot take criticism. After punching an elderly art director who criticized his work, Seishuu's father sent him away to a remote island to think about his actions. Seishuu is on a journey to find inspiration for his style but is constantly disturbed by the friendly island inhabitants.
This lighthearted anime makes use of childish antics to drive the plot. Seishuu is surrounded by hyperactive and cheerful kids who are interested in nature and adventures, particularly Naru, whose curious nature breaks down Seishuu’s character.
2 Revue Starlight: The Movie
Revue Starlight: The Movie is part of the Revue Starlight franchise. It is the continuation of the anime Revue Starlight and Rondo Rondo Rondo, as it goes deeper into the next chapter of its two main characters, Karen and Hikari. This franchise is a series of stage battles and songs.
Revue Starlight: The Movie continues the emotional journey of Karen and Hikari, the stage girls who are fighting for their place as the top star. Bound by a childhood promise, but ultimately, life had other plans, Karen is on a self-discovery journey after Hikari leaves.
1 Made In Abyss
This award-winning anime perfectly captures the horror of the abyss and the naivety of the main characters, Rico and Reg, who are kids. This anime gets darker as it goes by, and viewers can’t help but feel dreadful and emotionally invested in the well-being of the young characters, Rico and Reg.
Made in Abyss shows the journey of Rico and Reg as they descend into the Abyss, not knowing what awaits them, in a bid to find Rico’s mother, Lyza. Reg, on the other hand, is a robot in the form of a young boy who has no recollection of where he comes from.
