Immortals of Aveum takes place in a war-torn world where two giant kingdoms fight for dominance. There is Lucium along with Rasharn, and it seems like they are the villainous side of the conflict. The game stars Jak, an orphan whose life is torn upside down when the Rashanian Army attacks his home.

When his entire orphan family dies in the attack, Jak decides to join the Lucian army, and then time skips ahead for five years. Soon after, he becomes an Immortal, which is a special type of mage, or Magnus as they are referred to in Immortals of Aveum. That's the basic premise, so let's get to know the individual characters a little more.

Warning: This list contains spoilers!

8 Captain Selko

Captain Selko in Immortals of Aveum

Captain Selko is a side character in the game, and not much is known about him, but he deserves a nod. That’s because, unlike everyone else in the game, he is not a snarky character. He is a genuinely good soldier who does what he is told and is competent at leading his men. He is reliable, which is what a king or a commander would want to see in a captain of an army. Captain Selko isn’t a braindead soldier, though, and does have some funny lines.

7 Kirkan

Kirkan in Immortals of Aveum

Kirkan is a confusing character to understand. She is the Grand Magnus of Lucium, meaning that she is in charge of all army operations. She’s a strong mage, in other words, and one of the few strong female leads in the game. She keeps Jak and the rest of her subordinates on a tight leash and has little sympathy for disobeying orders. It seems like she wants the best for Lucium and the world, and she is stubborn to hear any deviations from her plans. By the end, it’s still unknown exactly what her intentions for the world truly were, as there are many secrets in her past.

6 Sandrakk

Sandrakk in Immortals of Aveum

Sandrakk is the main villain in Immortals of Aveum, and like Kirkan, he is a Grand Magnus but for the Rasharnians instead. His goals in life are as confusing as Kirkan’s because, from a distance, he looks like a typical villain in an RPG. He has a giant army, comes in and slaughters people with no remorse, wears a mask, and so on.

And yet he keeps trying to appeal to Jak that he is in the right and that the Lucians are in the wrong. Sandrakk is pretty much blowing smoke up Jak’s behind, but he definitely believes in his own fumes, twisted as they are.

5 Devyn

Devyn in Immortals of Aveum

Devyn is, thankfully, the only death of a major character in the game. It’s thankful there weren’t more, but it is sad at the same time. Of the main Immortals in Kirkan’s command, Devyn is the only one who took a liking to Jak right away. He loves to talk, perhaps too much, even in bad situations, but there is charm to his insistence on making a point. One of his funnier scenes involves Devyn drinking too much and suffering the consequences afterward. Also, his moment of sacrifice in the game is worth getting him on this list alone.

4 Luna

Luna in Immortals of Aveum

Luna is like the better half of Jak. She is confident in her thievery skills and overall abilities as a person. She knows what she wants in life, to be a mage in the Lucian army to help make a difference. Sadly, in an attack led by Sandrakk, she is killed. Or, that’s what Jak thinks at least, but she is instead recused by Sandrakk and made his right hand. It was kind of an obvious twist since she was a female character who wore a mask, but it could have fooled some players. Even though she became a villain, Luna comes back around to help Jak stop Sandrakk once and for all.

3 Jak

Jak in Immortals of Aveum

Jak is the main character in Immortals of Aveum, played by a relatively known actor for fans of the Netflix series, Never Have I Ever, aka Darren Barnet. Darren is also the star of Gran Turismo, which is based on the video game series. Jak has snark, but he has snark with a purpose.

He’s not a roguish character akin to Han Solo and instead uses sarcasm and wit to make a point without coming across as a jerk. He wants to be a good soldier, but he also doesn’t want to follow orders blindly. While not all of his brash decisions are wise, he at least tries to think outside the box and make characters see a different way of life.

2 Rook

Rook in Immortals of Aveum

Rook is the leader of the Aelori people. They look like demons, and most fear them. However, they are far from mindless monsters as they have intelligence. They were wronged by humans hundreds of years ago and were banished beneath the earth for selfish reasons. They're mostly feared because they suck magic away as a food source. Jak tries his best to understand their plight, and even though he doesn't like Jak at first, Rook comes to see that he truly is trying to help. He's rough around the edges, literally, but Rook has a reason to be.

1 Thaddeus

Thaddeus in Immortals of Aveum

Thaddeus is simply the best character in Immortals of Aveum. He's not voiced by Timothy Olyphant, but he certainly has the twang and looks of an older version of him. This cowboy-like magic gunslinger used to be the Grand Magnus before Kirkan took over. Afterward, he quit and fled to hide away with the Aelori to better understand them. He's wise, funny without being mean, and knows exactly what he is doing at all times. Perhaps the game could have been better if Thaddeus were leading it.

Immortals of Aveum was released on August 22, 2023, and is available on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
