5 Best Dinosaur Movies That Are Not Part Of The Jurassic Park Franchise

Films like King Kong and 65 combine stellar CGI with exciting plots, making them perfect for dinosaur fans who've seen Jurassic Park too many times.

Directed by Gareth Edwards, Jurassic World: Rebirth not only revives the sense of scale that makes the dinosaurs feel genuinely alive with impressive special effects, but it also takes a back-to-basics approach to these creatures. Rather than focusing on a lighthearted sci-fi adventure, the film portrays some dinosaurs as both breathtaking and terrifying, with certain ones leaving a more lasting impression than others.

8 Quetzalcoatlus

An Impressive Pterosaur That Leaves The Movie Too Quickly

  • The real Quetzacoatlus was even bigger than it is in the movie, rivaling the height of giraffes.

They first debuted in Jurassic World: Dominion as the aerial threat lurking in the skies above the BioSyn sanctuary. In Jurassic World: Rebirth, the Quetzacoatlus is a dinosaur that the characters are hunting to acquire a DNA sample, which they hope to use in creating a cure for heart disease. This results in a hectic and claustrophobic encounter inside the pterosaur's cliffside nest.

While the Quetzacoatlus has a disturbing way of killing a human character, the encounter with the creature ends just as quickly as it starts. The characters struggle more with the massive cliffs than the creature. It's an example of how Jurassic World: Rebirth often moves at a breakneck pace to get through multiple dinosaur attacks.

7 Mutadon

Expanding On The Horror Of Genetic Hybridization

  • The original pitch for Jurassic Park 4 had the concept of dinosaur/human hybrids.

Ile Saint-Hubert in Jurassic World: Rebirth is the island revealed to be the testing ground for mutated dinosaurs as a result of cross-species genetics, similar to the Indominus Rex. One result of the experiments is the Mutadon, a fusion of Velociraptor and Pteranodon that stalks the island’s village at night.

In the last third of the movie’s story, Mutadons become a large threat to the human characters, still exhibiting the intelligence and ferocity of a velociraptor. While they aren’t on the same level as previous hybrids, director Gareth Edwards and writer David Koepp do effectively utilize them to bring back horror elements akin to the first movie.

6 Dolores

A Cute Pet That Audiences Will Fall In Love With

  • On set, Dolores was a practical animatronic for actors to interact with.

Dolores is an Aquilops, which is one of the smallest species of dinosaur ever discovered. She is found and adopted by Isabella Delgado while her family is stranded on Ile Saint-Hubert. The dinosaurs are more of a source of horror in Jurassic World: Rebirth, and Dolores acts as a reminder that prehistoric creatures are still animals, not monsters like the hybrids.

Ark: Survival Evolved lets players tame dinosaurs, but which ones should be prioritized?

Jurassic World: Rebirth is also likely to sell plenty of merchandise based on Dolores, because she is adorable from the moment she is first introduced. The Jurassic World franchise has always appealed to all ages, and Dolores allows younger viewers to have a reprieve from the more frightening dinosaurs featured in Jurassic World: Rebirth.

5 Titanosaurus

Reminding Audiences That Dinosaurs Are Beautiful Creatures

  • Titanosaurus is the largest dinosaur ever discovered.

The largest land species on Ile Saint-Hubert is the Titanosaurus, and longtime fans may also clock this as a throwback to the original Jurassic Park when the characters met a Brachiosaurus. Since Jurassic World: Rebirth puts the characters through terror before they even reach the island, the Titanosaurus allows them, as well as the audience, to bask in its majesty and beauty.

While it’s easy to view dinosaurs as monsters, the long-running Jurassic franchise has continues to emphasize the fact that these creatures are just animals, with the Titanosaurus being a prime example. Additionally, the Titanosaurus is a distinct-looking, long-necked dinosaur thanks to its webbed spines and tail as long as its body.

4 Spinosaurus

Fans Of Jurassic Park 3 Should Be Happy

  • The original Spinosaurus canonically looks different because it was the first attempt at a hybrid.

Despite the controversial fight against the T-rex in Jurassic Park 3, fans have wanted to see Spinosaurus return in the modern movies since the first Jurassic World. Gareth Edwards finally brought them back in Jurassic World: Rebirth and even updated them to be the more amphibious animals that lurk in the ocean that paleontology has discovered them to be over the years.

Instead of just one, there is a whole pack of Spinosaurs living symbiotically with the Mosasaurus as the guardians of Ile Saint-Hubert. Their rampage on Kincaid’s boat, assisting the Mosasaurus, makes for a memorable landing on the island, especially when one of these dinos displays its stealth to perform a memorably brutal kill.

3 Mosasaurus

The Amphibious Dinosaur That Kicks Off The Action

  • The Mosasaurus has appeared in every Jurassic World entry.

Ever since it was introduced in Jurassic World, the Mosasaurus has been a standout of the current era of movies, but Jurassic World: Rebirth has it be an actual threat to humans. It is the first dinosaur they extract DNA from and encounter on the way to the remote tropical island, and it easily capsizes boats and makes for a thrilling sequence as the team and the Delgado family try to escape it.

The Mosasaurus could become the new star of the Jurassic World series, having appeared in every film since its debut. It serves as an excellent representation of the terrifying marine reptiles that roamed the Earth millions of years ago. In Rebirth, the Mosasaurus strikes a delicate balance, showcasing its beauty as it breaches like a whale while also demonstrating its prowess as a deadly predator of the ocean.

2 Distortus Rex

Not Enough Time Was Given To The Terrifying Mutant

  • It's never revealed what mix of dinosaurs the D-rex is.

Every movie and show in the Jurassic franchise has had some kind of signature dinosaur villain, from the original Rexy in Jurassic Park to the Indominus Rex in Jurassuc World, and Jurassic World: Rebirth continues that tradition. The Distortus Rex (D-rex) is the mutated reject that was described by the filmmakers as a mix of a Xenomorph from Alien, the Rancor from Star Wars, and a T-rex.

With four arms and a bulbous head, the D-Rex becomes the ultimate threat to the human characters during the film's climax, featuring a haunting roar, disturbing movements, and kills that make it more of a monster than the real dinosaurs. The only downside of the Distortus Rex is that, like other dinosaurs, it doesn’t get enough time to shine. It has a strong introduction in the prologue, but the humans only deal with it in the final act for a few minutes before escaping.

1 Tyrannosaurus Rex

Sometimes There Is No Beating The Classics

  • Jurassic Park and Jurassic World sequels always repurpose scrapped ideas from past movies.

It is impossible to have a Jurassic World movie without a Tyrannosaurus Rex, as they have been the poster child for the franchise since the original, and its inclusion in Rebirth is proof that it will always be the star dinosaur. Jurassic World: Rebirth continues the legacy of the legendary creature with a long, memorable encounter designed to please the fans of Michael Crichton’s original Jurassic Park novel.

The Delgado family is forced to deal with a sleeping T-rex when they attempt to use a river to reach the island’s village via a yellow raft, which causes it to wake up and chase them. The sequence is not only intense and turns the T-rex into a threat once again, but it is a scene lifted straight out of the Jurassic Park novel, even down to the color of the raft.
