A prequel to Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean, Baten Kaidos Origins was released in 2006 as a GameCube exclusive. The gameplay comprises a card-based combat system where all attacks, defenses, and items are represented by cards in the player’s “Magnus” deck. The fun comes from customizing and striving to improve decks through rare “Magnus,” fusing and enhancing powerful combos.

The game also incorporates interactive dialogue and gorgeous, atmospheric cutscenes that build a level of emotional depth rarely seen in a card RPG, with a richly textured story weaving fate, memory, and legacy and featuring strong character arcs. Despite critical acclaim, the stylized anime visuals and late release, coinciding with the launch of next-generation consoles, kept it relatively obscure.

A remaster of the Sega Dreamcast’s Skies of Arcadia featuring enhanced visuals, additional side quests, and plenty of rebalances, Skies of Arcadia: Legends remains the definitive version of the game. Set in a large open-world for its time, this action RPG has players sailing the skies in airships, recruiting diverse crews, and exploring floating continents, similar to Granblue Fantasy.

The combat is a curious mix of turn-based and real-time, allowing party members to move freely during their turn. The world-building is deep and intricate, with a facet of political intrigue and a motif of freedom vs dictatorship. Although it was set back due to being a port of an older game, Skies of Arcadia: Legends’ obscurity belies a beautifully crafted universe full of memorable characters and high-flying adventure.

lost kingdoms 2 castle

Long before FromSoftware set the industry ablaze with Dark Souls, they were making card-casting action-RPGs in the form of Lost Kingdoms and its sequel. Players use collectible “creature cards” to summon monsters, cast spells, and enhance their character's stats in battle. Decks can be customized, and creatures can even evolve, adding another layer of strategic depth.

These games may start slow, but they will grow into some of the best RPGs that the Super Nintendo has to offer.

In traditional FromSoft fashion, there’s also plenty of story to be enjoyed for any lore-heads. Taking place many generations after the events of the first game, Lost Kingdoms 2 has players take control of Tara Grimface and follow her journey towards discovering the secrets of her origins. Though it was released to moderate acclaim, the niche mechanics and card-based action limited Lost Kingdom 2’s mainstream success. Still, for anyone who has always wanted a game that’s a mash between Magic: The Gathering and Diablo, this is one for them.

Gladius

For a more gladiatorial twist in tactical turn-based RPGs, look no further than Gladius. Set in a richly detailed Roman-fantasy world, players take control of multiple fighters, each with customizable equipment, skill sets, and a unique class advancement tree. There’s even a co-op campaign, which allows two players to fight together in split-screen.

Storylines are intertwined with high-stakes politics, fights with rival schools, and the dark secrets of the world. Though it got strong reviews at launch, Gladius’ gritty, old-school aesthetic didn’t resonate with the mainstream GameCube audience. Even so, it remains a deep and cerebral tactical experience hidden within Nintendo’s vibrant catalog of the era.

A compilation of Evolution: The World of Sacred Device and its sequel on a single GameCube disc, Evolution Worlds is an action RPG that blends real-time dungeon crawling with a mission structure that seems inspired by Dark Cloud. The continuity features and improved mechanics from the sequel are a perfect way to enhance replayability and add story depth.

10 Best RPGs Published By Microsoft, Ranked

Microsoft has published many games over the years, and that includes some well known RPGs.

The game’s story follows Mag Launcher and his apprentice, Linear Cannon, as they explore dungeons, upgrade gear, and unearth interstellar mysteries. The game’s compilation format, childish-looking art style, kooky character naming schemes, and niche appeal prevented it from reaching mainstream attention despite solid gameplay mechanics. Still, Evolution Worlds offers double the RPG content for players craving some sci-fi fantasy in their GameCube titles.

Released in 2005 as a darker, more story-driven continuation of the already dark and story-driven Pokemon Colosseum, Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness has players control trainer Michael, tasked with purifying the “Shadow Pokemon” and stopping the nefarious Cipher organization. It carries the core Pokemon RPG mechanics of team-building and strategic battle planning, but adds the layer of capturing Shadow Pokemon and purifying them.

With narrative themes that are uncharacteristically deep for a Pokemon game, it tackles topics of redemption, free will, and moral ambiguity. Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness took a risk in its tone, which contributed to the game’s relative obscurity, but it’s still a must-play Pokemon entry that offers both narrative and strategic depth.

The first Fire Emblem game to feature 3D graphics and full voice acting, Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance features grid- and turn-based combat with permadeath, weapon triangle mechanics, and character promotion paths, as well as a deep story set in the war-torn continent of Tellius chock-full of political themes, acts of betrayal, and rise of Golden Age heroes.

By forming bonds with characters and influencing their growth, each member of the party truly feels like family, and the danger of losing them hits all the more thanks to the constant fear of permadeath. Relationships can even affect battle performance. The game was overshadowed internationally by later Fire Emblem titles on the Wii , but it remains a deeply strategic and emotionally resonant title that defined the GameCube’s RPG prestige.
