The closest modern equivalent of the point-and-click genre is the narrative adventure game, and Life is Strange is among the best in that category. It's far less linear than the Broken Sword series, and while it takes players on a terrific narrative-focused journey, the decisions made by Max, the protagonist, can alter how the story unfolds and provide more replay value.

Max and Chloe are compelling characters and fans of George and Nico's bond will find a lot to love with the friendships and character development available in the Life is Strange games. The series offers a supernatural twist in its stories with time manipulation or telekinesis playing a part in how the narratives play out.

Even though the Broken Sword series has its fair share of lighthearted characters and humorous moments, the Monkey Island series is pure comedy gold. In many ways, the series can be compared to Terry Gilliam's Ages of Man Trilogy: Brazil, Time Bandits, and The Adventures of Baron Munchausen. Like those films, there's a distinct sense of swashbuckling adventure meshed with tongue-in-cheek slapstick comedy in the Monkey Island games, which consist of Monkey Island, Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge, The Curse of Monkey Island, Escape from Monkey Island, Tales of Monkey Island, and Return to Monkey Island.

Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers is a classic adventure game that received a modernized 20th Anniversary Edition in 2014. It's a story that pulls Gabriel, a struggling author, into a world of murder and the occult all taking place in New Orleans. In terms of tone and setting, it's closer to a Stephen King story than Broken Sword, but fans of George and Nico will enjoy the bond between Gabriel and Grace, his assistant at the bookstore.

Like Broken Sword, Gabriel Knight is among the pinnacle of 90s-era adventure games. It takes Gabriel across the world into Germany and Africa. Sins of the Fathers features terrific characters, challenging puzzles, and an intriguing story that draws players into its dark world. There were several LucasArts Indiana Jones adventure games, but Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis is arguably the best. Instead of being based on the movies, it was an original story that saw Indiana Jones on the search for the legendary Lost City of Atlantis. The tone and the globe-trotting quest for ancient artifacts perfectly capture the charm of the movies. This is a point-and-click adventure that shares many similarities with the Broken Sword series.

Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis is LucasArts at their best. The script, characters, and the perfect balance of humor, drama, and adventure make it the best game in the Indiana Jones franchise. Even today, it recaptures the heart and feel of the original Indiana Jones trilogy without spectacular visuals or animations. Hopefully, the upcoming Indiana Jones and the Great Circle will draw upon the same magic that makes this point-and-click adventure so special.
