The newly-released episodic adventure game Dispatch is becoming one of the most critically-acclaimed new releases of the year, but console gamers can only play it if they have a PS5 handy. Dispatch is the first project from Adhoc Studio, a studio led by former Telltale Games developers.
Dispatch plays like a natural evolution of Telltale's classic projects, offering an interactive story that can be shaped by player choice. In it, players take on the role of ex-superhero Robert Robertson, who now works as a dispatcher that sends superheroes wherever they're needed. The game has earned critical acclaim for its animation, narrative, and performances by Aaron Paul, Jeffrey Wright, Laura Bailey, and others that make up its star-studded cast.
"A Lot of Important Decisions Are Made" Dispatch's Laura Bailey and Erin Yvette Reveal Their Favorite Episode
The Best War Games speaks with Dispatch's Laura Bailey and Erin Yvette about their favorite of the game's eight episodes and why it matters to the narrative.
Anyone that has enjoyed Telltale-style games should definitely consider giving Dispatch a look. Four episodes are available now, with two more dropping on November 5 and the final two coming on November 12. More reviews will come as the final episodes are released, but the game currently has an impressive 84 critic score on Metacritic with an even more impressive 9.2 user score. This makes Dispatch the third-highest-rated new game release of the year in terms of user score, behind only Digimon Story: Time Stranger (9.3) and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 (9.6). The catch is that Dispatch is currently only available on PC and PS5.
Will Dispatch Come to Xbox and Switch?
Dispatch Xbox and Switch ports have not been officially announced at the time of this writing. However, that doesn't mean that the game won't come to other platforms eventually. In an interview with Insider Gaming, Dispatch narrative director Pierre Shorette said that the game is only PC and PS5 at launch because PlayStation is "just a place that I think maybe we associate with good storytelling more so than maybe some other platforms." Switch and Xbox gamers may not be thrilled about this answer, but the door wasn't completely closed on the game eventually making its way elsewhere.
In fact, if Dispatch keeps enjoying the kind of buzz that it is, it seems highly likely that it will eventually be ported. Adhoc Studio will no doubt want to capitalize on Dispatch's early success, and one way to do that would be by making it playable on as many platforms as possible. For now, anyone interested in Dispatch will need to play it on PC or PS5, and gamers on those platforms can look forward to the next four episodes dropping on November 5 and November 12, respectively.
