Baldur's Gate 3 has become the highest-rated new video game release of 2023 so far, overtaking Nintendo's The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. Tears of the Kingdom has many more reviews than Baldur's Gate 3 does at this point, so it's possible that the latest Zelda game will eventually take its spot back. But even if Baldur's Gate 3 potentially loses its position as the top-rated game of the year, it will almost certainly always be in the top 10 highest-rated PC games.

At the time of this writing, Baldur's Gate 3 is the second highest-rated PC game in existence with a 97 overall score and finding itself just behind Disco Elysium. Baldur's Gate 3 is followed by Half-Life 2, Grand Theft Auto 5, The Orange Box, Half-Life, BioShock, Baldur's Gate 2: Shadows of Amn, Persona 5 Royal, and Portal 2. The Half-Life franchise and the Baldur's Gate franchise are the only two gaming franchises with two games in the top 10.

All three games in the main Baldur's Gate series have earned a great deal of critical acclaim. While the original Baldur's Gate wasn't rated quite high enough to crack the top 10, it still has an overall score above 90. This makes the Baldur's Gate trilogy stand out as one of the highest-rated video game trilogies of all time. There are some aspects of the first two Baldur's Gate games that some fans feel haven't aged well though, so if one decides to revisit the classics they shouldn't go in expecting something on the scale of Baldur's Gate 3.

Baldur's Gate 3's scale is something that even brand-new games are going to have difficulty matching. Baldur's Gate 3 is clearly a landmark release that will be talked about for years to come, and it will be exciting to see what Larian Studios does next.

Baldur's Gate 3 is out now for PC with a PS5 version coming September 6. An Xbox version of the game are also in development.
