The latest update to the Extra tier of PlayStation Plus has added The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered for PS5 gamers and The Last of Us Part 2 for those that are still gaming on PS4. Normally, updates to the Extra and Premium tiers of PlayStation Plus happen in the middle of the month, but subscribers were treated to a bonus game in September.

Sony recently hosted a new State of Play presentation that included new looks at upcoming games like Saros and Insomniac's highly-anticipated Wolverine, but it also featured announcements about upcoming PlayStation Plus games. To the surprise of PS Plus subscribers, a surprise bonus PS Plus Extra game was announced, and it has since been added to the service.

Last of Us Part 2 is Now on PS Plus Extra

PlayStation Plus subscribers who are signed up for the Extra and Premium tiers can now play The Last of Us Part 2 on PS4 and The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered on PS5. The Last of Us Part 2 won Game of the Year at The Game Awards in 2020, and it also picked up the awards for Best Game Direction, Best Narrative, Best Audio Design, Best Performance (for Laura Bailey as Abby), Innovation in Accessibility, and Best Action/Adventure Game. The Last of Us Part 2 earned an impressive 93 overall average critic rating as well, making it one of the highest-rated video games of all time. PS Plus Extra and Premium subscribers being able to play through it in its entirety without paying anything beyond what they already do for their subscriptions is a great deal, to say the least.

The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered’s Chronological Mode Can Finally Put One Controversy to Rest

Of course, The Last of Us Part 2 is not without controversy. Certain Last of Us 2 narrative choices were highly controversial, and so it will be interesting to see how new players discovering the game through PS Plus Extra react to it. But while there are some who take issue with The Last of Us Part 2's story, the gameplay has been universally praised. The remastered version is especially great, with even better performance and some new content for fans to check out, like the roguelike No Return mode.

The Last of Us Part 2 wasn't the only game confirmed for PS Plus at the latest State of Play. The free PS Plus games for October 2025 were also announced, with Alan Wake 2 headlining along with Cocoon and Goat Simulator 3, while Tekken 3, Soulcalilbur 3, and Tomb Raider Anniversary are on the way for PS Plus Premium before the end of 2025.
