Summary

  • Astro Bot is the highest-rated first-party PS5 game with a 95 critic rating, leading a small group of 90+ rated titles.
  • Only four other first-party PS5 games have earned a 90+ critic rating.
  • Future PS5 games may join Astro Bot in the over 90 club, but it's rare to reach such high critic scores.

Astro Bot is now one of five first-party PS5 games that has a 90 or above average critic rating. Astro Bot was released last week to universal critical acclaim, with many hailing it as an easy front-runner for Game of the Year at The Game Awards in December. Critics have praised Astro Bot's clever gameplay mechanics, inventive twists on the 3D platforming genre, fun callbacks to classic PlayStation games, and how it makes great use of the PS5 DualSense controller's unique features.

Astro Bot isn't the only critically-acclaimed first-party PS5 game, but it is currently the highest-rated first-party PS5 exclusive. Indeed, Astro Bot is one of the highest-rated video games of all time. The incredibly high praise enjoyed by the game means it is now part of an exclusive club that so far only includes four other titles.

Astro Bot is one of five first-party PS5 games that has earned a 90 or above overall critic rating, according to review aggregate site OpenCritic. Astro Bot is actually leading the pack, with a 95 overall rating. Second place goes to God of War Ragnarok, which has a 93 rating, followed by the Demon's Souls remake at 92, and Marvel's Spider-Man 2 and The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered at 90. Needless to say, this puts Astro Bot in very good company, with the 3D platformer standing out as one of the PS5's best exclusives to date.

Highest-Rated First-Party PS5 Games

  1. Astro Bot - 95
  2. God of War Ragnarok - 93
  3. Demon's Souls (2020) - 92
  4. Marvel's Spider-Man 2 - 90
  5. The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered - 90

Four years into the PS5's lifespan, and some may be shocked to see the number of first-party games above 90 being so low. However, it is rare for a game to hit a 90 average critic score, let alone reach the heights that Astro Bot reviews did. It's possible future PS5 games will join Astro Bot and these other games as the best representatives of what the PS5 has to offer, but time will tell on that front.

It's worth pointing out that there are some non-first-party PS5 console exclusives that have also earned a 90 or above critic rating. The most notable is Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, which released earlier this year to glowing reviews. Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth was 2024's highest-rated game for a time, though it has since lost that spot to Astro Bot.
