Risk of Rain 2 is one of the best roguelike games on Steam right now. It has addicting RNG mechanics, is fun to replay over and over again, and has enough variations to keep the player addicted to the game for dozens and dozens of hours.
However, it’s not perfect by any means. There is always room for improvement. The good news is that this game has a very active modding community, with hundreds of high-quality mods that add new survivors, items, and enemies, or make different quality-of-life improvements.
Risk Of Rain 2: How To Install Mods
If you're starved for variety, there are plenty of Risk of Rain 2 mods out there that you can try, provided that you know how to make them work.
Updated on September 10, 2024, by Huzaifa Haq: Risk of Rain 2: Seekers of the Storm is a controversial DLC, to say the least. Fans were skeptical of the DLC since Gearbox was the one making it rather than Hopoo, and the high number of game-breaking bugs at the start of the DLC didn't help matters. Since then, Gearbox has released a patch that fixes many of the most egregious bugs and is continuing to work on minor bugs to improve the game further. Since the Seekers of the Storm DLC was released recently, many of the mods don't work all the time, though many more have already been updated to accommodate the changes made in the new patch.
6 ProperSave
Don’t Lose Progress Anymore
- Author: KingEnderBrine
- Description: Saves player progress at the start of the stage so they can load later
- Thunderstore Page
- GitHub Page
Having to leave halfway through a run because of real-world responsibilities is one of the worst feelings in the world, especially when the run is going supremely well. It is definitely an intentional design choice on the developer's end to encourage players to keep playing, but when life calls, there's nothing to do but leave.
That’s where ProperSave comes to the rescue. Whether the player is getting tired in the middle of a run or has something important to do that can’t wait an extra 30 minutes, ProperSave will let the player save their game at the start of each stage. This way, they only need to beat the boss and progress to the next stage to save the game.
5 DropinMultiplayer
Why Wait Until the End of a Run
- Author: niwith
- Description: Drop in and out of multiplayer with friends. Automatically adds items to help the player catch up
- Thunderstore Page
- GitHub Page
One frustrating aspect of a game like Risk of Rain 2 is seeing a friend hop into a game, and booting it up, only to find out that they have already started a run. Completing runs can take a lot of time, and it’s not possible to join someone in the middle of their run.
Risk Of Rain 2: How To Unlock The False Son
The False Son is a juggernaut of a character in Risk of Rain 2, offering a mix of both ranged and melee combat. Here's how to unlock him.
DropinMultiplayer lets players do exactly that. Moreover, it gives the player a few items depending on which stage they're joining their friend. Of course, their friend friends will need this mod as well for it to work, but after setting it up once, players can rest assured that they can join their buddies without any wait the next time they're a few minutes late to open the game.
4 InstantTeleporter
Convergence Takes Too Long
- Author: Dragonyck
- Description: Instantly charge the teleporter after killing the boss
- Thunderstore Page
Waiting for the teleporter to charge after fighting and defeating the boss can be very annoying. This isn’t a big deal in the early stages when boss fights tend to take a little bit of time, but if the player is having a good run, they'll likely finish off the boss quite fast.
Even if the player is overpowered in the moment, all survivors are equal before the unfeeling teleporter. The game makes the player wait the whole 90 seconds regardless of how quickly they can kill the boss. Focused Convergence can reduce the wait by 50% on three stacks, but InstantTeleporter is still the better option since it lets the player charge the teleporter much faster, or even skip the charging mechanic altogether and unlock the teleporter as soon as the boss is dead.
3 ShrineOfDio
Necromancy Comes With a Price
- Author: KosmosisDire
- Description: Resurrect fallen teammates. Spawns a Shrine of Dio on every stage (replaces the Shrine of the Woods)
- Thunderstore Page
Dying is a natural part of life, and it is also a natural part of Risk of Rain 2. There’s no shame in failing a skill check, but it stings a lot more when there's a friend along for the ride. Seeker players can revive their teammates, but if the other person isn’t playing Seeker, then they won't be able to revive anyone.
Risk Of Rain 2: 6 Best Red Legendary Items, Ranked
From dealing more damage to increasaing proc chains, these red legendary items in Risk of Rain 2 are guaranteed to make any run last longer.
Dying at the start of a stage makes the player miss out on all the stage items, creating a negative feedback loop that sees them dying more and more often due to lack of proper gear. With the ShrineOfDio mod, surviving players can sacrifice some of their gold to revive teammates. If there is more than one player dead, the revived player is random. The gold cost of reviving a player scales with the stages, similar to chest pricing.
2 QoLChests
Make Life Better
- Author: Faustvii
- Description: Quality of life changes to chests, terminals, scrapper, duplicator, turrets, and drones. - Hide when empty and highlighting
- Thunderstore Page
- GitHub Page
Risk of Rain 2 is a great game, but it falls a little short when it comes to quality-of-life features. The Survivors of the Void update has some new features that rectify this issue, but there are still many possible improvements, especially to chests.
QoL currently does not highlight large utility and large health chests.
Nobody likes seeing a chest across the map, slowly making their way to it, only to find out that they had already opened it earlier. This mod makes it so that used chests fade away, clearing the visual clutter and avoiding frustrating situations like this.
1 CommandQueue
The Best Artifact, Now Even Better
- Author: KubeRoot
- Description: Queue up items players want to automatically pick up with Command
- Thunderstore Page
- GitHub Page
Without a doubt, the most powerful artifact in Risk of Rain 2 is the Artifact of Command. It removes most of the RNG from a run, letting players pick which item they want, though they can only choose from the rarity that drops from each chest. In a high-octane game like Risk of Rain 2, there often isn’t enough time to contemplate the different choices available.
Players need to decide beforehand which items they want and select their desired options as fast as possible. However, this method is prone to human error and still leaves the player open to hits from nearby enemies. CommandQueue lets players select which items they want beforehand and spawns them according to their parameters. It makes the process much more streamlined, making it so players don’t have to stop moving every time they want to open a chest.
