Love is in the air or maybe for robots it could be said that sparks or radio waves are in the air. Robots need love too and there have been so many great works of fiction that have explored what it is to be a robot in love. A recent movie, for example, is Companion although that took a horrific turn.

Xenosaga is a complicated trilogy on the PS2 with heavy themes of religion and tons of characters. One of the villains, Virgil, is a racist against the androids of this universe called Realians. He doesn’t go into details about why before getting gunned down very early in the first game only to return as The Blue Testament later, the Testaments being a religious supergroup. In the final game, players learn that Virgil fell in love with a Realian, Febronia, who shared some of her mechanical organs with Virgil to save his life. Unfortunately, other Realians hunting for Virgil kill Febronia which is where his deepened hatred for Realians comes into play. In the end, the angelic form of Febronia comes to comfort Virgil after Shion and the other defeat his alter ego, and they embrace once more.

When things start to heat up toward the end, Iris is killed in the Reploid rebellion leaving Zero to cry over her body. The English version makes this tender and tragic moment a bit hilarious because the dub is a bit awkwardly acted.

Chrono Trigger takes the heroes to multiple periods including the then future of 1999. Here they find a robot, Robo, who they repair and then fight some other robots in his series before jumping in a time gate. Later in the game, they find another robot in the future, Atropos XR, who claims to have been Robo’s female companion. Robo is at first excited but then he learns Atropos XR means to do his new friends harm so a one-on-one boss battle occurs. Mother Brain, not the Metroid version, reprogrammed Atropos XR to be evil, leading to a bittersweet end. Revenge is taken soon after as the party confronts and dismantles Mother Brain and pays respect to Atropos XR.

4 Claptrap and GlaDOS (Poker Night 2)

A Very Fast Courtship

  • Developer: April 24, 2013 (Xbox 360 Version)
  • Publisher: Telltale Games
  • Released: Telltale Games
  • Platform: Xbox 360, PS3, PC, iOS

Poker Night 2 is one of the more forgotten indie games of the Xbox 360 era. Players could compete in poker matches with Claptrap from Borderlands, Sam from Sam and Max, Brock Samson from The Venture Bros., and Ash from The Evil Dead. Also, GlaDOS from Portal was the card dealer. Throughout matches, a story would unfold between Claptrap and GlaDOS which began as flirtations then to them moving in together, and then to their breakup. While it ends disastrously, the dialogue in-between is funny and it’s equally fun to imagine these two robots hooking up outside of the game.

One of the best side quests in Stellar Blade involves two robotic-looking entities named Enya and Su. There’s a bar in the HUB town of Xion wherein Eve will meet Su. He wants to fix Enya up who barely has a body to stand on anymore. This side quest will take a few different entries to fully restore Enya to her fully voiced self even involving Enya trying to do something nice for Su. While they may look like complete opposites, these two love each other dearly. It’s the sweetest couple in the game for sure and maybe even in the post-apocalypse.

Joker is the pilot of the ship in Mass Effect who is assisted by an A.I. Named EDI. The two don’t get along at first with some playful banter starting in the second game. Eventually, they grow on each other to the point of players, as Commander Shepard, assisting Joker in getting a body for EDI by Mass Effect 3 so that Joker and EDI can be together more intimately.

Some great new rom-com movies for Valentine's Day include Anyone But You, We Live In Time, and The Idea Of You.

Depending on the ending players get, Joker and EDI could even become the same sentient species neither robot nor human. As weird as it is to fall in love with a ship that then gets a body, it is nice that Joker and EDI seemingly have a happy ending together.

Persona 3 is the first game in the series that introduced the Social Links aspects to gameplay. Players could hang out with party members or other characters to build their relationships with them. Makoto, the canonical name for the protagonist, can even date a robot. What makes this game stand out above others is that it feels like a real courtship as players can see Aegis, a battle android, who slowly learns the way of humans. It’s sweet even if it is only fleeting. What makes this romance seem like one of the better options is Aegis’ attachment. It’s so powerful that there was even DLC for the original PS2 game, albeit in a repackaged version, that saw her try to bring Makoto back from death. That’s love pure and simple whether it’s perceived as romantic or plutonic.
