However, hardcore fans of RPGs also know how much fun it can be to mess around with a magic system, especially one that allows for immense customization. There's something inherently engaging about forming a unique spell that only the player has access to, letting them use offensive or defensive abilities to take out their enemies in style. Players who customize the suite of magic they have access to can have a great time slinging these spells in the heat of battle and watching the chaos that ensues.

It's a shame that Tyranny's budget ran out before the game could realize the full potential of its story. It's easily one of the most unique and intriguing CRPGs players can get their hands on, letting them enjoy a fleshed-out evil playthrough that is a blast to experience until the final third of the narrative. What makes this game more engaging is its tactical real-time combat that can be further enhanced with a magic system that is brimming with potential.

Players find several types of sigils that can be combined to make healing, support, or offensive magic with varying potencies. Each kind of spell requires a different combination of sigils, and players can unlock them as they go through the game and use their Lore stat to decipher more sigils present in the game world. By the end of the game, players can mix and match these sigils to make powerful spells that can inflict pain to their enemies, debilitate them, buff the party, or heal allies in no time.

Morrowind is one of the greatest open-world RPGs of all time, embodying old-school gameplay design that is endearing if somewhat hard to adjust to for fans used to modern games. Many things can be highlighted about Morrowind that make it clear why fans can't get enough of this amazing Elder Scrolls title, but one particular area that the game excels in is letting players form ridiculous spells that can annihilate enemies with a single cast.

Players have to accumulate a ridiculous amount of Magicka to cast some of the most destructive custom spells that can be formed in the game, but this is a grind that many are willing to undertake. After all, it lets them obliterate enemies in style and rewards them for the grind they must undertake to become one of the most destructive mages in the game.

The materia system is easily one of the best things about Final Fantasy 7, a game that has aged like a fine wine. The fact that the Remake trilogy has adapted this mechanic without any major changes is a testament to how revolutionary it was, with players feeling a sense of satisfaction whenever they get their hands on a powerful piece of materia that can turn the tide of battle in a flash.

2 Two Worlds 2

Combine Spell Cards To Create Potent Magic

  • Platforms: PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PC
  • Release Date: November 12, 2010
  • Developer: Reality Pump

Two Worlds 2 is an underrated RPG that fans of the genre can check out if they wish to enjoy some of the best crafting and spellcasting systems in a game. Looting everything in sight is something that fans won't mind as long as they make the most of this game's systems, and it's genuinely impressive that this title managed to bounce back after the horrid quality of the first game. Players who wish to become a powerful mage can do so here with one of the most customizable magic systems in an RPG game.

In Two Worlds 2, players gather magic cards during their adventure that fit into one of two categories — Effect Cards and Carrier Cards. The former governs the element of the spell, and the latter decides the kind of effect this has. The sheer number of combinations that can be achieved with such a system is immense, even if magic is far from balanced in this game. Thankfully, this is the only gripe in a highly customizable system that lets players tinker with the spell combinations they can enjoy for ages without any issues.

An innovative RPG that lets players mess around with one of the most unique magic systems to come out for quite some time, the combat of Magicka is centered around drawing elements and combining them with spell effects to unleash a wealth of arcane combos in battle. A great way to present it would be to call it a fighting game, but players use the elements to deal damage instead of their fists or weapons.

With eight elements and four ways to cast them, it's easy to see why fans will love the many permutations and combinations that can arise from such a system. To make things better, players have access to all spells from the get-go, and their ability to pull off inventive combos is the only thing stopping them from pushing the customizable magic system of Magicka to its fullest extent.
