Anime is not a world for children's eyes alone. While plenty of shows cater to a younger audience, some of the best in the medium fall under the seinen anime category. Distinguished from the teen-oriented shonen properties, seinen stories explore more adult topics, all the while covering pretty much every genre under the sun.

Of course, some themes found in these types of anime may be a little uncomfortable for younger audiences. However, viewers looking for more mature stories might find that the best seinen anime are more their speed. Like shonen or shojo, seinen covers a spectrum of genres that go beyond just action or thrillers. The demographic has produced romance, slice of life, isekai, comedy, and everything else.

Updated June 15, 2025 by Mark Sammut: Spring 2025 is almost over, and one seinen anime, Uma Musume: Cinderella Gray, deserves to be promoted to the all-time best list. Summer 2025 is right around the corner too, and it is time to start getting excited.

Exciting New Summer 2025 Seinen Anime

Summer 2025 is right around the corner, and I feel like the excitement is just about starting to reach fever pitch. Spring 2025 will go down as a solid lineup, but it has arguably lacked that "IT" factor. Still, the season's best anime is seinen, so we cannot complain too much.

The upcoming quarter has so much potential for brilliance, and My Dress-Up Darling will almost certainly be Summer 2025's biggest seinen anime. The romance slice of life show had a great first cour, and if everything goes well, the sequel should be even better. Grand Blue Dreaming is also making its long-awaited comeback, and I cannot wait for its return.

Rather than focusing on series that everybody knows, let's highlight a couple of forthcoming new seinen anime that will hopefully go down in history as all-time greats.

  • The Summer Hikaru Died – Due to horror's track record in anime, I would advise against getting too excited about any new adaptation. That said, The Summer Hikaru Died should be great. Mokumokuren's manga is a touching, chilling, and suspenseful supernatural mystery, one built around the twisted remains of a friendship. The anime will be on Netflix. Please be good.
  • CITY the Animation – This is an adaptation of a slice of life comedy manga by the same author behind Nichijou. Do I need to say anything more?
  • Uglymug, Epicfighter – A pretty weird pick for an isekai adaptation, this series has been done for a few years, although a sequel manga debuted in 2024. When starting over, the protagonist decides to rearrange his stats, so his appearance is in the negative digits, and he looks the part.

Sui Ishida's Tokyo Ghoul is a top-tier seinen manga that should be read by anyone remotely interested in dark fantasy. On paper, this story seems like the perfect candidate for an anime adaptation, especially since it already has a huge fanbase that is ready to jump on board. While not flawless, Pierrot's 2014 season is a respectable adaptation that covers roughly 1/3rd of the original manga, delivering good animation, intriguing characters, and great world-building. The story walks the line between action and horror, prioritizing the former while incorporating enough elements from the latter to warrant a watch for people craving gore-fests.

Unfortunately, Tokyo Ghoul notoriously went off the boil after its opening season, to the point that I think quite a few people would suggest straight-up avoiding it. They blend elements from the manga with original content, creating a confusing mess that is not satisfying as either an adaptation or an anime-only continuation. As such, Tokyo Ghoul cannot be described as one of the absolute best seinen anime, despite being among the most popular.

This is it, the pinnacle of harem anime. In a genre known for sparking waifu wars, 100 Girlfriends dares to ask "but, what if they all win?" Unlucky at love, Rentaro wears his heart on his sleeve, a personality trait that has resulted in constant rejection. Before entering high school, the teenager heads to a shrine to pray for guidance, only to be directly answered by a god who reveals that Rentaro will soon be meeting 100 girls who are his soul mates. Also, he has to keep all of them happy. Brief panic attack aside, Rentaro is more than up to the task.

The 35 Best Harem Manga With No Anime Adaptations

There have been plenty of great harem anime over the years, but these fantastic harem manga have yet to receive adaptations.

I know harem anime have a negative reputation, but 100 Girlfriends is a genuinely hilarious parody that also highlights the genre at its best. Direct and oozing innocence, Rentaro is an absolute delight, which he has to be for this premise to work. While the anime has a ways to go before reaching the manga, the female characters introduced so far are perfect matches for the lead, and they are just as funny. Season 2 is even better than its predecessor, with 100 Girlfriends fully embracing absurdity to create something that I can confidently say transcends the harem genre. This series is comfortably among the best seinen anime comedies.

The Fable had a pretty slow start, but it grew in popularity and quality throughout its two-cour run. While Katsuhisa Minami's manga is respected, it is not a very well-known name either, which limits the adaptation's reach to an extent. Tezuka Productions' animation style can seem awkward at first and requires some getting used to; even after crossing that threshold, the anime does not manage to replicate the source material's realistic aesthetic.

Even with all those elements, The Fable is still fantastic, and, as a big fan of dark humor, I thought it was among the funniest anime of 2024. The story follows an infamous hitman and his driver as they are forced to lie low for a year, which means moving to Osaka and trying to act normal. Rebranded as Akira, the eponymous Fable has no real idea of how to interact with people, and he tends to come across as creepy even when he is trying to be nice. Still, it is hilarious and oddly wholesome to see this trained killer bumble his way through ordinary life, all the while occasionally getting dragged into some rather intense Yakuza-related situations.

A small-town high school girl moves to the big city, aka Tokyo, in pursuit of a lifelong dream. As basic as this premise sounds on the surface, Misaki Takamtsu's Skip and Loafer should not be dismissed as just another run-of-the-mill slice of life. The manga has been on a roll since debuting in 2018, and it has steadily established itself as one of the best ongoing seinen properties. Mitsumi is the girl in question, and while she is wholly unprepared for a bustling city like Tokyo, she nevertheless dives headfirst into the challenge without stopping to take a breath. She also receives a helping hand from a classmate named Shima.

10 Slice Of Life Anime To Watch If You Love Skip And Loafer

Skip and Loafer is a refreshing slice-of-life story with a lot to offer fans of the genre. Fans of this anime will appreciate these shows.

Skip and Loafer blends comedy, introspection, and character development. While relatively relaxed, the story offers a grounded take on high school life, which can be dramatic and stressful. So far, P.A. Works has done a great job with the adaptation.

Good news! Skip and Loafer season 2 is on the way. I cannot wait.

Sports anime are mainly associated with shonen, but the genre has told a couple of worthwhile seinen stories. I wasn't sure if I wanted or needed another figure skating anime besides Yuri on Ice, but Medalist immediately killed any reservations by introducing two characters who demanded to be adored. Low on confidence but relentlessly determined, Inori's passion for the sport is infectious, and her late start quickly establishes her as an underdog who is very much swimming against the tide.

While a brilliant character on her own, Inori does not need to carry the show solo as she is accompanied by her coach, Tsukasa. Carrying his own insecurities from regrets stemming from his career as a skater, Tsukasa is Inori's perfect partner, one who complements his student perfectly. Even the supporting characters and rivals are great, and

What if any event in a person's past could be undone? Well, this is exactly the situation that the seinen anime Erased focuses on. The anime tells the story of Satoru Fujinuma and the mysterious incidents that took the lives of his mother and his childhood friends.

The twist? Satoru must use the ability that sends him eighteen years into the past, in which he must solve the incidents as his childhood self. The mystery of Erased is eye-catching, offering a good variety of fast-paced scenes and striking visuals. Most seinen fans will find something they enjoy about Erased, but I recommend going in with lowered expectations as this anime has a habit of being slightly overhyped.

To the uninitiated, I understand the concept of "horsegirls" can seem off-putting, especially within the context of seinen. However, Uma Musume is effectively a sports franchise about running, albeit with racers who have horse ears and tails. Cinderella Gray is the IP's first proper seinen story, and it is by far the best entry up to this point (besides the manga it is based on). You do not need to watch any other series either, as Cinderella Gray is a standalone spin-off that requires no additional reading.

This anime tells Oguri Cap's story, a horsegirl with a unique running style who has just started her journey to the top. Cinderella Gray takes direct inspiration from Japanese horse racing history, showing the highs and lows synonymous with the sport. While funny at times, the series handles drama incredibly well and knows how to pull heartstrings.

Oshi no Ko has produced two great seasons that dive into the entertainment industry, all the while being wrapped up in a murder mystery and a revenge fantasy. While driven by Aqua's desire to find the person responsible for Ai's death, the anime primarily revolves around passionate performers and creators, who are trying to achieve something special in a deeply manipulative industry.

For the most part, I found seasons 1 and 2 captivating, blending visual spectacle with charming characters who tend to clash due to their ambitious natures. As strong as its elements are, Oshi no Ko can feel a bit directionless and scattershot at times, especially for people who are primarily interested in the mystery aspect. However, as a character study that explores different aspects of the entertainment industry, Oshi no Ko is frequently masterful.

One-Punch Man is kind of a weird case. The English manga is published in Weekly Shonen Jump, but the original Japanese story is found in Tonari no Young Jump, which is a seinen magazine. Consequently, the anime kind of walks the line between both, but it is ultimately a seinen series. Furthermore, the anime's two seasons vary wildly in terms of quality, with the first entry being far better than its successor.

Featured Strongest Characters One Punch Man Saitama Garou God
One Punch Man: Top 17 Strongest Characters In The Series

The One Punch Man series is home to several powerful individuals. These characters can't be taken lightly.

1

Madhouse handled the opening season, and the studio delivered top-notch animation that injected each fight with a sense of epicness that does justice to the source material. The humor is also on point. The eponymous hero, Saitama, defeats every opponent with a single punch, making him so overpowered that he starts to develop depression due to feeling nothing during most encounters. Season 1 is worth watching on its own and great enough to warrant a spot among the best seinen anime ever. Meanwhile, season 2 is just an above-average action anime that occasionally produces a cool moment. It is nowhere near the same level as its predecessor. Hopefully, One-Punch Man season 3 will be better.

Another modern classic of the seinen genre, Parasyte received global love for its horrific visuals and interesting concept. The story focuses on an alien species called parasites that drill into a person's brain to control their body completely.

However, unlike how this process usually goes, the story's protagonist Shinichi Izumi stops his parasite from taking his body, trapping it in his right hand instead. Viewers will then be held in the suspenseful pacing of the series, as they watch Shinichi and his parasite (called Migi) survive the incurring apocalypse.
