According to Circana's Executive Director & Video Game Industry Advisor Mat Piscatella, FromSoftware's Elden Ring took home the gold medal. Elden Ring has returned to the top of a monthly best-selling list for the first time since its original release in May 2022. While Elden Ring can certainly stand on its own, the game's Shadow of the Erdtree expansion has been a major hit as well, selling five million copies within three days of its release, likely aiding in giving the base game the push it needed to take the top spot. Elden Ring is followed by several other gaming powerhouses, notably Call of Duty, Kingdom Hearts, and Minecraft.

Shadow of the Erdtree marks one of the biggest pieces of extra downloadable content gamers have seen in recent memory, adding on considerably to the already large world of Elden Ring and The Lands Between. Shadow of the Erdtree also significantly enhances Elden Ring's story and lore, putting players on an entirely new journey separate from the one in the main game. The DLC was a long time coming, with FromSoftware first showing off Shadow of the Erdtree gameplay earlier this February.

Shadow of the Erdtree officially hit digital store shelves on June 21, 2024, and the rest is history. The game was already a smash hit, with Elden Ring selling millions upon millions of copies, but Shadow of the Erdtree propelled Elden Ring to even newer heights. However, despite the great sales performance and near-universal praise for both the game and its DLC, Elden Ring developers have stated there are no plans to develop any more content in the future, indicating Shadow of the Erdtree is the end of the road.
