A story is only as good as its villain, and the same is true for shonen manga. In fact, some of the best antagonists in fiction are from manga, and they’re impossible to depict correctly in the anime medium. At least, not without cutting out bits and pieces that take away from their nuances.

Everything from the villains’ presence and their appearance to the way they carry themselves and their inner monologues is a delight for fans. It’s amazing how villains can go from unsettlingly calm to cold-bloodedly cruel and cunning in just a few panels. Anime-only fans are missing out on the fiesta of the bad seeds that have yet to make their starring appearance out of the pages of manga.
1 Kouu

It says a lot about a shonen manga where the major antagonist is so clever and evil that the likes of one of the cruelest people to ever walk this earth are their underlings. Petals of Reincarnation is a unique shonen manga that deals with reincarnation in a very quirky way. People can access their ancestral talent abilities through a mystical object, the "branch of reincarnation," and become someone called the "Returner."
Kouu is one of the main bad guys of Petals of Reincarnation. He is a very wacky and utterly overpowered villain with an eventual redemption arc. He proves himself to be a master manipulator and a charismatic leader who assembles a cabal of Returners called "Sinners" to fight against the "Forest Of The Greats." What makes him so terrifying is the loyalty he inspires, where his followers are essentially ready to lay their lives down for him just to get him to praise them.
2 Dogol

Despite the story of this particular shonen manga being non-canon to the Shadow Hearts video game series, Koudelka features one of the evilest villains ever. There’s no anime adaptation of the manga, either. The villain Dogol in Koudelka has a God complex while acting as a subservient right-hand man — and that, frankly, is the scariest type of manipulation. His ego is too grand, and his ambition is to achieve Godhood.

While it may not have the realism of today's platforms, the PlayStation 1 had truly chilling and genuinely scary games.
He sees through to this dream of his by amassing enough control and power through heading a shady organization with plenty of hired muscle and power. He sends henchmen to kidnap people off the streets to commit horrid acts — nothing short of live sacrifices. He does this just to possess eldritch-level horror abilities. One of his vilest powers is being able to spawn familiars — Imps, which he then uses to overwhelm his enemies. He goads those above him in rank to achieve his goal, but he also isn’t afraid to get his hands dirty.
3 Coach IISA

Now, normally, the villains in shonen manga, regardless of whether they have an anime or not, have this unique quirkiness to them. But this next one is the most relatable and humane of them all. Coach Ilsa's villain origin story from the manga Tuxedo Gin is as basic as it gets. It’s her drive and fixation with the reincarnated protagonist, Ginji, that makes her such a compelling character. In other words, she's as human as, well, humans go.
She’s bitter and vindictive toward the main female lead, Minako, simply because she perceives her as a rival for Ginji’s affection. She even goes so far as to sabotage Minako with a prank that would have been humiliating if it had been carried out. Luckily, Genji discovers the plan in time and stops it. But things don’t go down without a hitch — Coach Ilsa goes as far as trying to silence Genji by attempting to murder him. Talk about an overreaction, but that’s precisely what makes Coach Ilsa from Tuxedo Gin so fascinating.

For fans of originality, the shonen manga Nekogahara will feel like a delightful change of pace. For what it's worth, story-wise, it’s baffling that it hasn’t received an anime yet. The art style and backdrop of an alternate feudal Japan setting where everyone is a cat is prime anime material. As for the antagonist in Nekogahara, the villain is Amemura Rican Short — how do these mangakas come up with these names?
Despite the hilarious name, Amemura Rican Short is a vile feline feudal lord who subjugates his people. He possesses great political acumen to maintain his control over the populace and is not afraid to show it off. One of the few examples of this is him coming to an agreement with criminals to operate freely in his domain and turning a blind eye to their misdeeds to keep the citizens in line. Another evil trait of his is to keep a steady supply of catnip flowing throughout his territory. This is to keep the citizens very dependent on the herb and not make them rise in revolt against him.
5 Chandra Hume

Choujin X is the latest work from the creator of the famous Tokyo Ghoul manga, and surprisingly, it hasn’t received an anime adaptation... Yet. Choujin X is also a major point of debate because it sits somewhere between shonen and seinen and has elements from both genres. It has so many elements that give very distinct vibes, similar to what one would feel if they read Chainsaw Man. Despite all of that, though, there’s no denying that the manga itself is excellent, as are its villains. The manga boasts a great selection of antagonists, but the one who truly stands out is, without a doubt, Chandra Hume. This is very ironic, considering he’s a man of mystery, and very little information has been revealed about him so far.

Chandra Hume is a powerful smoke-Choujin who is extremely skilled and sadistic. He appears cordial but can just as easily kill innocent bystanders on a whim or if he feels disrespected. He has shown himself capable of not only fending off powerful foes but also resurrecting himself should he be put down. Chandra Hume is a terrifying villain with the perfect combination of brawn and brains.
6 Ayu Mitsuari

Astral Buddy is a standalone spin-off of a manga that already received an anime adaptation. Fortunately, this particular series features an entirely different cast, and the manga has not received an anime yet, so this antagonist still counts! Ayu Mitsuari from the manga Astral Buddy is a tragic villain who is a victim of circumstances and her insecurities. Fans can empathize with her situation, but her actions are still highly malicious and inexcusable. A case in point is that she has casually done memory manipulation on people just to use them as expendable pawns. That shows that Ayu has a twisted mind.
If manipulation doesn’t work, then Ayu will resort to physical harm. A prime example of that is her going so far as to choke her main rival, Misaki. Unlike most other villains, this one has a particularly nasty inferiority complex that makes her a bit more sympathetic — and, frankly, a bit relatable. She feels like she’s never good enough and suffers internally because of it.
7 Sulya

Sulya from the manga Fire Punch is one of the most disturbing, compelling, and powerful villains in the shonen world, and that is what puts her on top as an antagonist. Fire Punch is essentially a dystopian mystery manga that depicts the world after a devastating apocalypse where humanity is mostly wiped out. The main antagonist of the series is a mage known as the Ice Witch. What makes the Ice Witch, or Sulya, such a frightening villain is her messiah-complex persona, in which she intends to save humanity. The problem is that her method of saving involves killing humanity.
The funny thing is, this is attributed to her being a literal Star Wars nerd! In fact, it’s not just a throw-away gag or joke but one of her defining traits. She wishes to restore humanity just so the canceled Star Wars movies can be made, and she can watch them again. She likes to ramble on like a cartoon villain and has a penchant for showing off and exposing her plans to anyone who would listen. Her quirky nature doesn’t mean she’s not powerful, though. She basically has elemental powers of ice and fire and can form the "World Tree" — an object that has the twisted powers to drain a living being's life energy.
