Everyone starts with up to three melee weapons in Where Winds Meet — two of them are given to players at the start of the game, while another is chosen from a selection of four different weapons shortly afterward. You can only choose one out of those four, and your choice can have a drastic effect on how you experience the early parts of your journey.
The Nameless Sword and Spear are excellent weapons in their own right, but later, once you rescue Qi Sheng and get an Oddity for him in Where Winds Meet, you'll be able to choose a more specialized weapon. If you're not quite sure which one of these weapons you should pick, here's a brief overview of each of them.

Which Starting Weapon Should You Choose in WWM?
The best weapon to pick out of the four that Qi Sheng offers is whatever you think is the coolest. Although, there are some rather important things to consider before you make a decision:
- The Nameless Sword and Nameless Spear are good DPS weapons, lowering the practical value of choosing the Infernal Twinblades.
- The Vernal Umbrella and Thundercry Blade can only be obtained in the second major region.
- The Infernal Twinblades and Panacea Fan can be obtained early in the first region.
- Your first fight against Campaign and Mysterious Bosses affects you with Healing Reduction, which affects the Panacea Fan.
All weapons can be earned through gameplay. The gacha system in Where Winds Meet is strictly for cosmetics and minor consumables items only.
Weapon names like Infernal Twinblades, Nameless Sword, and Thundercry Blade actually refer to martial arts fighting styles, and to use the weapons associated with them, you need to learn the martial arts styles themselves. This means that if you have a pair of twinblades but have no knowledge of the Infernal Twinblades style, you won't be able to use the weapons.

These pair of short swords fall under the Melee DPS category. They're designed for quick, relentless cuts that use their speed to compensate for their relatively lower damage-on-hit. The Infernal Twinblades clash with the Nameless Sword and Spear for the role of DPS weapon, which may make them feel a bit redundant. However, if you're a fan of this fighting style, it'll be a ton of fun for you.
Flamelash is the Twinblades' unique skill. It basically makes you berserk, enhancing your basic attacks and crit stats while your special Karmic Flame meter. The playstyle is simple: hit enemies to fill Karmic Flame, enter Flamelash to boost your DPS, don't die, repeat.
There seems to be a mistranslation in Flamelash's in-game description. It states that it makes attacks drain HP, but in reality it grants you lifesteal.

The Thundercry Blade trades speed for sweeping light attacks and crushing heavy attacks. This weapon is meant for a tank playstyle; not only can it knock enemies off their feet, but it also comes with the Predator Shield skill, which grants you a damage-absorbing barrier for a short duration.
Unlike the Infernal Twinblades' fast playstyle, the Thundercry Blade relies on charged attacks. Most of your damage will come from fully-charged light or heavy attacks, and thankfully, using the weapon's skills buffs your charged attacks, either making them hit harder or charge faster. If you want to play as a melee brawler who can super-armor through incoming attacks, then this weapon is something you should consider getting early.
Thundercry Blade's light and heavy attacks can both be charged. Light attacks deal damage over a wide area, while heavy attacks blast their damage over a more concentrated point. Charged attacks consume Fighting Spirit (gained over time or by blocking) to gain an additional charge level.

The Panacea Fan is the healer's starting weapon in Where Winds Meet, and it fits quite a few fashion styles too. This version of the fan weapon uses ranged attacks to damage enemies, while its skills and heavy attack are used to heal yourself and other players. This is the healing version of the Fan weapon archetype, and it's not to be confused with the DPS-focused Inkwell Fan.
As a support-based weapon, the Panacea Fan isn't that good at dealing damage compared to the other weapons we've mentioned so far. It can still hold its own against the most basic of enemies, but when it comes to big boss fights, you'll need to use something else if you want to deal big damage.

Charging your light attack causes you to continuously fire projectiles with your umbrella. Doing so builds up Blossom, a special resource used to fuel the Vernal Umbrella's abilities.
The Vernal Umbrella (or Ninefold Umbrella) martial arts style focuses on ranged attacks to pelt enemies with blows from close to medium range. Like the Thundercry Blade, this fighting style uses light and heavy charged attacks as a core part of its kit. The Vernal Umbrella is great for crowd control thanks to its Spring Sorrow ability, making it a complementary weapon for the Nameless Spear and Thundercry Blade.
Needless to say that the Vernal Umbrella is best for players who want to keep a safe distance between them and their targets. However, this fighting style isn't strictly ranged-only, and you'll get the most out of it if you combine it with another DPS weapon.
