Summary
- Couch co-op gaming brings its own unique kind of fun that online multiplayer can't replicate.
- Face-to-face competition lets players truly share the experience and bond over victories and defeats.
- Enjoy classics like Tekken Tag Tournament 2 or Crash Team Racing with friends on the same sofa.
These days multiplayer games are mainly played online, whether with friends or strangers. While this allows players an endless roster of companions to game with, embarking on couch co-op adventures or otherwise button-bashing beside friends will always bring its own brand of fun. It’s simply not possible to cover an opponent’s eyes to steal a victory when they’re on a separate console elsewhere. They’re not forced to listen to the maniacal laughter that follows or witness a glory lap around the room. Side by side, players can truly share the experience, as well as some snacks. Plus of course, friends without the same console or game can play too.
Co-Op Indie Games To Play With Friends
It's not just AAA games that have excellent co-op modes. These indie titles have some of the finest co-op gameplay for friends to enjoy.
Fortunately, there are plenty of fantastic games out there featuring local multiplayer. For Xbox Game Pass users, many of them are available for free. However, there are some great couch co-op titles that some gamers may not be aware of since they are not available on Xbox Game Pass.
Updated on March 21, 2024, by Ritwik Mitra: The Xbox brand has seen its fair share of ups and downs in modern times, with many people finding the console to be a bit of an unnecessary purchase given its lack of exclusive games. However, there's no denying that this console is great for players who want to game on a budget, with the sheer wealth of games present on this console making it a decent pick for any fan of everything from AAA masterpieces to indie gems and everything in between. Fans of local multiplayer titles will also be spoiled for choice, as the Xbox can boast the better collection of local multiplayer games in the current generation. With that in mind, more games that are perfect for local multiplayer have been included on this list.
While games not on Game Pass will be prioritized, a few exceptions will be included.

It’s a difficult venture at times, even with a friend, but delightfully rewarding and visually second to none.
