Gortash is one of the most important characters in Baldur's Gate 3, and players can decide whether he will become an ally or an enemy in Act 3. Gortash is hardly a positive character, as Karlach convinces players throughout the game, but siding with him does come with a few benefits.

Although Gortash is a negative character, he has a lot of power that can be useful in achieving the protagonists' goals. This guide will help adventurers decide whether they should side with Gortash or not in Baldur's Gate 3.

Why Should You Side With Gortash?

Baldur’s Gate 3: Gortash

Once the adventurers arrive at Gortash's coronation, he will greet them with a warm welcome and offer to join forces for mutual goals and the common good. He then asks the player to kill Orin to prevent her from collecting all 3 Netherstones, thus protecting Baldur's Gate from her. Although, at first glance, Gortash appears unreliable, this alliance has many more advantages than disadvantages.

Since Gortash controls the Steel Watchers and the Flaming Fist Guards, having him on the player's side will make it easier to move around the city. Also, Gortash will go with players to fight the Elder Brain when the three Netherstones are collected. However, there are also good reasons to reject Gortash's offer. The main one is that he betrayed Karlach and sold her to Zariel. Also, he is keeping Duke Ravengard in his prison.

Still, it is not worth fighting him right at the coronation because he is surrounded by many Steel Watchers who are very difficult to defeat, and all the guards in the fortress will become hostile. So, if players still don't want to team up with Gortash, it's better to pretend that they are with him and betray him later. This will allow them to take advantage of the deal first and then kill him in more favorable conditions.

As for Orin, she will also offer a deal, asking the protagonist to kill Gortash. If the player does not agree, she will kidnap one of their companions or Yenna and kill her cat. The cat's death can be avoided if Yenna joins the camp after Orin's death. But still, fans can save other characters whom Orin kidnaps.

This will not happen if the players team up with the shapeshifter, but this alliance offers little advantage. When the adventurers bring her Netherstones, a battle will still take place, so, in general, it is better to side with Gortash.
