Summary

  • Dive into the depths of gaming with colossal sea creatures like the Sea Emperor Leviathan - an awe-inspiring behemoth in Subnautica.
  • Prepare for battles against massive underwater foes like Moeder from ARK: Survival Evolved - a boss like no other in the oceanic realm.
  • Experience the fear and wonder of facing off against mythical giants like Jormungandr in God of War - a true test of strength and courage.

Since ancient times, the sea has provided innumerable tales of serpents, sirens, and sea monsters across a vast array of cultures. Both fascinating and daunting in equal respects, the sea is home to more than its fair share of curious and monstrous creatures. Several games have made an effort to construct truly gargantuan sea creatures, often making players face off against them in combat, or interact with them in some way.

The sight of a Sea Emperor Leviathan is not something that Subnautica players take lightly. This colossal, demonic insectoid beast will completely dwarf players and their equipment, and serves a central role in the more alien affairs of the game's story.

Capable of telepathic speech, the Sea Emperor is actually a captive on the planet, and players can work to free its young if they so choose. Though not necessarily a hostile enemy "boss", the Sea Emperor Leviathan is a truly humbling sight to behold in-game.

This Lovecraftian horror is an incredible rendition of some of the author's darkest fantasies, complete with iridescent skin and a horrible proclivity for mutilating human beings.

When drilling in the North Sea, the crew of the Beira D oil rig drill into a mysterious object. It quickly becomes clear that they have awoken a primordial, perhaps even cosmic monster that infects the oil and turns whoever it touches into a demonic fleshy mutant.

Jormungandr, The World Serpent of the Jotun, is one of the great giants of Midgard and inhabits the Lake of Nine. Appearing in both God of War and God of War: Ragnarok, Jormungandr provides some of the most dramatic scenes in the series.

In Norse mythology, Jormungandr was large enough to encircle the entire Earth, until the mighty Thor finally slayed it in battle. Kratos must, similarly, do battle with the Midgard Serpent in God of War. Measuring at nearly five kilometers long, Jormungandr is the largest sea creature seen in gaming so far.
