8 Lazarus

For players looking for a bit of help, Lazarus might be the ideal choice. Once dead, like his namesake, he rises once more for a second chance. When he's revived, players will start where they succumbed to death. In his second life, Lazarus will also have stronger base stats.

To unlock Lazarus, players will need to have at least four soul hearts during one single run. In his original form, he starts with three red hearts and a random pill pickup. When revived, Lazarus will have one red heart. Upon respawning, he will also leave a trail behind him that causes damage to any enemies that get close enough.

7 Samson

It's pretty challenging to make it through any floor in this game without taking damage. Samson more than makes up for that by dishing out even more damage with every hit he takes. This character starts with three red hearts, but also has the Child's Heart pickup, enabling him to find a heart pickup more easily at the end of a room. 6 Magdalene

3 Isaac

The Underrated Hero

Isaac is unlocked from the start and is essentially the underrated hero of the game. He doesn't seem like much, but he is a solid choice, especially when there's no other option. When players first start the game, Isaac will have one bomb to start a run. It's only later that he becomes a bit more exceptional.

2 Cain

Cain is pretty average when looking at his base stats, but it's his items that make him unique. He starts with one key and a Lucky Foot. The Lucky Foot increases his ability to find pickups after clearing rooms. Players who have the Afterbirth DLC can also unlock the Paperclip, which allows Cain to open all chests without a key.

To make the most out of Cain, players will need to find items to build his health and damage. He can be unlocked by having 55 or more coins in one run. He's not the best choice for beginners, but once players are more adjusted to the game's mechanics, he's an awesome option.

1 Azazel

Azazel doesn't start with regular heart containers, but instead has three black ones. However, he can obtain red ones throughout the course of a run.
