Black Clover Season 5 (or Season 2, according to Crunchyroll) might not be coming as soon as fans expected. Over the weekend, Crunchyroll finally announced the long-awaited continuation of the Black Clover anime, which went on hiatus a few years ago.

However, not long after the news was out, the announcement received a disappointing update. For fans who have waited so long for news on the production, it might be really frustrating, but there are still reasons to celebrate.

Black Clover Season 5 Might Not Come in 2026

When Crunchyroll initially released the video announcing the return of the Black Clover anime, it stated that the series was slated to air in 2026. However, a few hours later, the 2026 release window was removed from the description (it was never featured in the trailer itself).

This could mean many things. One option is that the release window is already decided, but Crunchyroll may not have intended to reveal it yet. Another option is that the series is now postponed to 2027 or later. A third option, which might be the most likely one, is that someone accidentally added this date to the description; Crunchyroll revealed many series at Anime Expo, so those taking care of video uploads could have been confused about this anime and added the release window of another series in the description of this video.

Why Is Crunchyroll Calling It Season 2?

Another thing that has confused fans is that Crunchyroll is calling the new season "Season 2," while there have been "four Black Clover seasons" released in home-video format by Crunchyroll (formerly Funimation). Crunchyroll is likely using the term that Studio Pierrot uses to refer to this season. As the previous episodes were produced without breaks, they are all part of the same season from a production perspective.

However, once episodes are compiled into DVD/BD boxes, distribution companies usually divide these boxes into seasons. This is an official division, but not from a production perspective, so the number of seasons can differ from distributor to distributor. In any case, it might be less confusing if Crunchyroll called it "Part 2" instead of "Season 2." Either way, Crunchyroll's "Season 2" is what fans call "Season 5."

Until I get what I want, I will not give up. Well, not giving up is my only weapon.

— Asta

The next episodes will begin with the adaptation of Chapter 270 of the manga and start covering the final arc of the story soon. Given that Pierrot is changing its approach to anime and giving priority to producing anime in seasons instead of producing series that run straight for years, Season 5 should be about one or two cours long (something around 12 to 26 episodes).

Black Clover is available to stream on Crunchyroll, subbed and dubbed in English and other languages.
