Where Did the Black Clover Leave Off?

The Black Clover TV anime aired from 2017 to 2021, with a total of 170 episodes. As is common with long-running anime, it included a fair amount of filler content. The anime likely went on hiatus due to Pierrot restructuring its internal organization, focusing on the production of both Black Clover: Sword of the Wizard King and Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War, and being too close to the source material.

It's been known for years that Black Clover is heading towards its end. So Pierrot likely decided it would be best to wait for the manga to advance and then adapt everything that was left. The last episode adapted up to Chapter 269, so they will likely start with Chapter 270.

When the anime entered the hiatus, Black Clover had released about 284 chapters, so the anime was really close to the manga and would be forced into making more filler content. Since then, over 100 chapters have been published, and the manga will soon release Chapters 381 and 382.

Is It Season 2 Or Season 5?

Crunchyroll is calling the next season "Season 2," referring to the fact that all 170 previous episodes were produced continuously. That's because a "season" usually refers to a batch of episodes produced all at once. For anime that don't take any breaks, all episodes could be considered part of the same batch.

Therefore, from a production perspective, there are no official seasons. However, once the episodes are released in DVD/Blu-ray formats, the distributors usually divide each box as seasons. This division is usually taken by fans as the official seasons of the anime. Crunchyroll (formerly Funimation) released 4 "seasons" of Black Clover in home video format. Thus, many fans are referring to the new season as "Season 5," while Crunchyroll refers to it as "Season 2."

When Will Black Clover Season 5 Be Released?

Crunchyroll initially announced that Black Clover Season 5 would be released in 2026. However, this information has been removed from the trailer and its description. It could either mean that the season was postponed or that this information wasn't supposed to be revealed.

The second option is typically what happens in this kind of case. Therefore, there is still a huge chance that the anime will be out in 2026. However, it could have been postponed. For now, fans just have to wait for more updates.

Will the Next Season Adapt the Ending?

Although Pierrot waited years for the manga to advance, it seems unlikely that the next season will cover the ending of the manga. Even though Black Clover should end within a few chapters, and thus it would be possible for the next season to cover everything, Pierrot is changing the way it approaches anime adaptations.

Therefore, it's unlikely that the next season will run straight for years like the previous ones. Black Clover Season 5 will probably run for one or two cours (12–26 episodes) and then return after a few months with Season 6, and it will follow this pattern until the full manga is adapted. There is more than enough content to produce one or two cours and there will still be a lot left for the next seasons.
