Black Myth: Wukong is an ambitious project, widely regarded as the first AAA video game from China — and rightly so. While the game may not offer in-depth exploration or a vast array of weapons like Elden Ring, it does feature a ridiculous number of boss battles. These encounters include hidden, optional, and mandatory fights, adding to the challenge and excitement.
The guide below provides a comprehensive walkthrough of the first region in Chapter 1 — Forest of Wolves. It covers everything you can experience in the area, from meditation spots and chests to hidden items and optional boss battles.
This walkthrough contains spoilers, so players should proceed with caution.
How to Save in Black Myth: Wukong
Learn how the save system works in Black Myth: Wukong and understand how it influences your gameplay experience. Ensure you never lose any progress.
Reaching Forest of Wolves Region
When you start the game, you'll be presented with a lengthy cutscene before being thrust into a battle with the game's introductory boss, Erland, The Sacred Divinity. Don’t worry — while he has a wide range of moves and a large health pool, you can easily defeat him, since you can’t die in this fight.
After you defeat him, another cutscene will play, and you'll be plunged into the game’s first chapter, Black Cloud, Red Fire, which takes place in the Black Wind Mountain region (specifically in the Forest of Wolves subregion).
Reaching First Keeper’s Shrine
From the starting point, defeat the two enemies ahead of you. This is the tutorial area, so take your time to familiarize yourself with the controls. After defeating them, continue along the linear path, eliminating any enemies you encounter. Eventually, you'll come across a chest — open it to claim its loot.
You'll also notice a ray of sparkling light guiding you forward. Follow it to reach your first Keeper’s Shrine. You will automatically interact with it when you get close (in future encounters, interacting with Keeper’s Shrines will require player input). After a brief cutscene, you will receive the
Incense Trail Talisman.
If you pre-ordered Black Myth: Wukong or purchased the Deluxe Edition, interact with the Shrine again, navigate to the Trailblazer's Gift tab, and claim any extra items. Be sure to equip them by opening the Equipment tab.

Reaching and Defeating the First Boss — Bullguard
Continue forward, defeating any enemies and gathering plants along the way. Eventually, you'll encounter your first true boss, the Bullguard. Instead of attacking him immediately, take the left path, where you'll find a creature near a rock (the creature will flee upon seeing you). Approach the rock to acquire the
Skandha of Form, a key item that will be useful later.
After obtaining the
Skandha of Form, turn your attention back to the Bullguard and engage in battle. Defeat him by dodging his giant axe and following up with counterattacks. During the fight, a cutscene will play, and you'll receive the Immobilize Spell.
First Meditation Spot and Second Keeper’s Shrine
Continue along the path where the boss was located and follow the trail, defeating any enemies in your way. Eventually, you'll reach an area where you can meditate — this is the first of three Meditation Spots in the Black Wind Mountain region.
After meditating, turn around and follow the path through the rocks. You'll soon encounter another Keeper’s Shrine. Be sure to interact with it and rest to replenish your health, mana, and healing resource, the Gourd.
You can now use the Keeper’s Shrine to fast travel between previously activated Shrines.

Reaching and Defeating the Second Boss — Guangzhi
After a brief cutscene, you'll transform into a Golden Cicada. Use this form to bypass enemies and continue forward until you encounter a turquoise-colored boss. Don’t fight it yet; instead, take the left path until you reach a Torii Gate. If you have trouble finding it, transform it back to your normal form and explore the area until you do.
Crossing the gate will trigger another cutscene and initiate a battle with the second boss on your journey, Guangzhi. This boss is tough, and you may die a few times, so keep trying until you achieve victory.
Avoid his fiery staff attacks, and if you catch fire, dodge repeatedly to extinguish it.
Once you've defeated the boss, pick up his staff to be rewarded with the Red Tiles Spell. Afterward, interact with the massive bell in front of you. This is one of the three bells you need to ring in the Black Cloud, Red Fire chapter to unlock a secret.
How to Unequip Items in Black Myth: Wukong
Learn how to efficiently manage your inventory in Black Myth: Wukong. The guide covers equipping, unequipping, and swapping items with ease.
Defeating Wandering Wight and Reaching Guanyin Temple
Now that you've defeated Guangzhi and acquired the Red Tiles Spell, head back to the turquoise-colored boss you previously encountered,
Wandering Wight. He will be the toughest enemy you’ve faced so far. You have two options: either take on this optional but challenging boss or run past him. The latter is recommended, but don’t hesitate to give the fight a few tries, as there’s no penalty for dying.
Whichever option you choose, make your way through the door and follow the wooden path until you reach Guanyin Temple. Interact with the Keeper’s Shrine here and be sure to rest again. You will now unlock the Craft Armor feature. Craft the Pilgrim’s Headband, as it will allow you to heal while sprinting. If you have enough resources, craft the entire Pilgrim’s Set. Now it's time to equip the set and continue your journey.
Defeating Final Boss of Forest of Wolves Region — Lingxuzi
Loot everything in the courtyard, including the chest, before heading through the gate in front of you. Here, you will face the final boss of this subregion, Lingxuzi — a giant, wolf-like creature that you’ll likely have to confront multiple times, as defeating him on the first try is unlikely.
Watch out for his leaping attacks and claw swipes. At the start of the fight, use the
Immobilize Spell to freeze him, then transform into Guangzhi using the Red Tiles Spell. This will give you a chance to deal heavy damage early on.
If you can inflict the fire status on him, it will deal continuous damage over time.
Spam the
Immobilize Spell whenever its cooldown finishes, and follow up with heavy attacks. While Lingxuzi isn’t the toughest boss in Black Myth: Wukong, he may still take a few tries to defeat. Once you’ve dispatched him, you’ll be rewarded with the Grey Wolf Mask and a
Mind Core, the latter being a must-have upgrade material.

Finishing Up the Forest of Wolves Region
Be sure to explore the next courtyard and collect everything you can find. There will be another chest here — loot it and continue forward. When you enter the next room, turn to your left to find a giant statue. Interact with its altar to receive the
Celestial Jade Lotus Pill. This collectible item will automatically and permanently increase your health, so it’s essential not to miss it as the journey ahead will become increasingly challenging.
Feel free to return and try defeating the Wandering Wight if you haven’t already. If he remains too difficult, revisit him later when you’re stronger.
After acquiring the Lotus Pill, exit the building and interact with the Keeper’s Shrine in front of you. Congratulations, you’ve now reached the next subregion of Chapter 1, known as The Bamboo Grove.
