While many were optimistic about the game in the lead-up to its launch, it's safe to say that Black Myth: Wukong has defied all commercial expectations.

Black Myth: Wukong has been a massive sales success, selling over 18 million units at last count and smashing records in the process. Indeed, Black Myth: Wukong broke Steam concurrent player count records, and is quite easily one of the most successful games of 2024 to date. Now Black Myth: Wukong has yet another feather in its cap, as it dominated the PlayStation Store's downloads for August 2024.

According to PlayStation, Black Myth: Wukong was the most-downloaded PlayStation Store game for August 2024 in North America, Japan, and Europe, beating the likes of Madden NFL 25, which is incredible for a brand-new IP. If its sales continue to be this strong, Black Myth: Wukong could very well become the best-selling new video game of 2024, though it faces stiff competition in the months ahead from the likes of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6.

Most years, Call of Duty is the best-selling game, but there are exceptions to that rule. Whenever Rockstar decides to release a game, it tends to be the best-selling of that year, and in 2023, Hogwarts Legacy was the best-selling new release. Black Myth: Wukong certainly stands a good shot at beating Call of Duty sales-wise this year, especially when one considers the fact that Black Ops 6 is a day one Xbox Game Pass Ultimate game, but that remains to be seen.

Something working against Black Myth: Wukong is that it's only available on PC and PS5, whereas Black Ops 6 is a cross-gen game that's also available on Xbox platforms. Black Myth: Wukong is expected to come to Xbox at some point down the line, but there are no plans to bring it to PS4 or Xbox One, which definitely hurts its chances.

Regardless, there's no denying Black Myth: Wukong has been a sales phenomenon. It will be interesting to see if it's able to keep its spot at the top of the charts once the September 2024 data becomes available next month.

Black Myth: Wukong is an action RPG rooted in Chinese mythology and based on Journey to the West, one of the Four Great Classical Novels of Chinese literature.

You shall set out as the Destined One to venture into the challenges and marvels ahead, to uncover the obscured truth beneath the veil of a glorious legend from the past.
