The Unwritten Rules of Black Myth: Wukong's Combat

Combos Can Change the Tide of Battle in Black Myth: Wukong

Black Myth: Wukong is a very difficult game, enough to frustrate even the most seasoned Soulslike fans with its countless swift and tireless bosses. As such, it's important for anyone diving into Black Myth: Wukong for the first time to know the ins and outs of its combat. Otherwise, they'll take the fast track to repeated deaths and therefore inhibit their progress. One of the most valuable features players will need to take advantage of in Black Myth: Wukong's challenging combat is combos, as they can often turn the tide of battle.

Firstly, a full execution of the Destined One's Light Attack combo can deal considerable damage to enemies in and of itself. However, Black Myth: Wukong's Varied Combos are even more useful. Performing a Varied Combo in Black Myth: Wukong requires nothing more than one Focus Point and the execution of a Heavy Attack in the middle of a Light Attack combo. This is an efficient method for getting the raw damage of a Heavy Attack without its slow animation, which can be extremely helpful when fighting one of Black Myth: Wukong's fleet-footed bosses.

Varied Combos change depending on which stance players have active, each one with a unique advantage over the others, so players should weigh which combo would work best according to the situation.

Respecification Is Necessary to Overcome Some of Black Myth: Wukong's Toughest Foes

Skill point respecification in a role-playing game is typically an expensive endeavor, as it generally requires the player to shell out currency in exchange for the ability to rebuild their character. In Black Myth: Wukong, however, players can respec their skills points, or "Sparks," an unlimited number of times for free at any of the Keeper's Shrines found throughout the game's sizable world. The fact that Black Myth: Wukong allows players to perform such an advantageous move for free says something about how often it is necessary, which is something players should thoroughly consider as they progress through the game.

Black Myth: Wukong's respecification feature is free for a reason — it's often a player's only option for finally defeating an otherwise insurmountable boss. In light of that, players shouldn't shy away from respecifying their skill points, or, as the game calls it, "Reignite the Sparks." This can be done at any Keeper's Shrine via the "Self-Advance" tab, either Spark-by-Spark or a complete reset of all skill points.

Spirits Are Useful in a Variety of Ways, But One Spirit Rules Them All

One of the most useful features in Black Myth: Wukong is Spirits, which can be obtained shortly into the game's first chapter. Spirits can be acquired by defeating mini-bosses or more hearty versions of Lesser Yaoguais and can then be equipped and used in combat. Each Spirit has a passive Equipped Effect that can provide some much-needed buffs, but Spirits can also be used to deal direct damage to enemies or stagger them. There are dozens of Spirits to find in Black Myth: Wukong, but one Spirit arguably bests the rest in terms of its damage and Equipped Effect.

Black Myth: Wukong's respecification feature is free for a reason — it's often a player's only option for finally defeating an otherwise insurmountable boss.

The Wandering Wight is by far the best Spirit in Black Myth: Wukong, as it significantly increases Defense when it is equipped, takes a significant chunk out of an enemy's health on contact, and even briefly staggers them. What's even more beneficial about the Wandering Wight is that it can be obtained fairly early on in the game, so long as players are brave enough to face the Wandering Wight in the Forest of Wolves area in Black Wind Mountain.

Transformations Have Separate Health Bars

Players will only learn a handful of legitimate transformations in Black Myth: Wukong, but they can be life-savers and tremendous damage-dealers. While transformations can be used to dish out a considerable amount of damage, they are even more useful for protecting the Destined One's health bar, as each transformation has a separate health bar. As such, should players find the Destined One to be in critical health, it might be time to transform, if not just to provide the protagonist with a temporary meat shield that can deal some damage in the process.

The Unwritten Rules of Black Myth: Wukong's Exploration

Exploration in Black Myth: Wukong Is Almost Always Worth It

Black Myth: Wukong isn't an open-world game, but there is plenty of ground to cover and it is almost always worth exploring. When venturing off the beaten path in Black Myth: Wukong, players can find a variety of different resources and treasures, but the biggest potential discovery of all is the game's secret areas. Each major region in Black Myth: Wukong has a secret area with a secret boss, and should players find every secret area and boss, they will unlock a different ending for the game. There are also plenty of other bosses in the game that can only be found by exploring every nook and cranny, but players need to be thorough.

There Are Several Secrets to Progress in Black Myth: Wukong's World

There are also several secrets to progress in Black Myth: Wukong, should players find themselves stuck or in need of a helping hand. For instance, absorbing a Spirit or Will Wisp in Black Myth: Wukong will also refill the Gourd, which is used for healing. As such, players should use their Gourd to heal themselves before absorbing a Spirit or Will Wisp to take full advantage of the bonus effect.

Additionally, Black Myth: Wukong's Cloud Step spell is a combat skill that can be useful outside of combat as well. If players feel like skipping enemy mobs or need to find a way past an otherwise impassable group of foes, Cloud Step will cause the Destined One to temporarily cloak himself so he can pass by without being seen. Finally, each of Black Myth: Wukong's regions has a separate store from the rest, and players should revisit them, as well as any merchants in the world, regularly throughout the playthrough to take advantage of any new items they may be offering.
