Game Science CEO Feng Ji stated that, while plans for Black Myth: Wukong are taking a backseat to the ongoing development of Black Myth: Zhong Kui, the tale of Sun Wukong is not over yet. Instead, Game Science will start from scratch with Black Myth: Zhong Kui and return to Black Myth: Wukong in some capacity, though it is not clear if an expansion or a sequel is being considered.
Although Black Myth: Wukong fans were expecting an expansion to be revealed during Gamescom Opening Night Live, the closing trailer of the show was instead the first look at Black Myth: Zhong Kui. While details about the next Black Myth title are sparse, it was confirmed to be a single-player action RPG that will launch on PC and current consoles at a later date. Like Sun Wukong, Zhong Kui is a deity from Chinese folklore. Gamescom Opening Night Live host Geoff Keighley stated that Zhong Kui was a "ghost-catching god who wanders between Hell and Earth."
Black Myth: Wukong Credited With PC Monitor Sales Boost
A market analysis credits the historic success of Game Science's Black Myth: Wukong with hugely boosting the sales of PC gaming monitors.
The Story of Sun Wukong Is Not Over Yet
While Black Myth fans will learn about Zhong Kui and the inspirations behind his character in due time, Game Science also stated that it is open to continuing Sun Wukong's story. As reported by MP1st, Game Science CEO Feng Ji posted a message on the Chinese social media site Weibo, recounting what led up to the reveal of Black Myth: Zhong Kui. Feng Ji stated that, while Black Myth: Wukong was originally planned to have post-launch DLC, things changed during development. Feng Ji said that the change came after Game Science co-founder Yang Qui asked him if he would rather work on something new instead of a DLC. Yang Qui's words then led Game Science to develop what became Black Myth: Zhong Kui. Concerning the project's development, Feng Ji said, "We want to free our hands, experiment boldly, break from fixed formulas, and start from scratch."
However, Feng Ji reassured fans that "Journey to the West", the story that inspired Black Myth: Wukong, is a tale that Game Science will return to. Given Black Myth: Wukong's wild success on the PS5 and on PC, Feng Ji said, "Like all of you, I love the world of Journey to the West, the world of demons, monsters, gods, and Buddhas, so Sun Wukong’s legend will return in due course, in a more complete and solid way, once it’s properly prepared."
In the meantime, more fans can now experience the story of the Monkey King, as Black Myth: Wukong was released on August 20 on Xbox consoles. Whether a Black Myth: Wukong expansion or sequel will be considered remains to be seen.
