Summary

  • Double Kukris are fun but weak early on due to enemy armor. Save for later use or upgrade.
  • Hyssop is a heavy weapon for one-shot kills, but slow and low in defense. Effective against armor.
  • Warhammer offers heavy and piercing damage, but slow and leaves Aran vulnerable. Effective against slower enemies.

The brutal combat system is at the forefront of Blades of Fire's gameplay. The protagonist, Aran de Lira, is a powerful warrior and a blacksmith chosen by the gods to save the land from an evil queen and restore the petrified steel in the world. Aran draws his strength from the steel he wields in his weapons instead of leveling up beyond health and stamina boosts found in runes.

Blades Of Fire: Best Combat Tips

Battles are like duels in Blades of Fire. Here are some helpful combat tips to make short work of Aran's enemies.

Many of the best weapons in Blades of Fire, found early in the first two regions of the game, Besacarr Hamlet and the Hollow Plains, will greatly benefit Aran for much of the game. This list highlights the best weapons that Aran can forge early in Blades of Fire.

All weapons decrease in effectiveness the more they are used. After wearing down, even the most effective weapons won't be effective against heavily armored enemies or monsters with thick skin.

6 Double Kukris

Fast And Fun To Use, But Weak In The Early Game

Weapon Type

Daggers

Forge Scroll Requirements

Kill 30 Marauders

The Double Kukris are Daggers that are obtained by killing 30 Marauders that can be found hidden in some of the houses in Besacarr Hamlet and the Hollow Plains area. While they are a lot of fun to use as Aran executes fast chain combinations, most of the enemies in these two regions are invulnerable to them because of their thick armor.

However, they do work well against the Marauders. The Kukris are better saved until later, when Aran obtains better materials and gains upgrades from the Seneschal Statues, or wait until Aran can unlock a better version of the Dagger.

5 Hyssop

A Heavy Weapon Good For One-Shot Kills

Weapon Type

Polearm

Forge Scroll Requirements

Forged as part of the storyline

The Hyssop is a heavy, blunt weapon that can take enemies down with one shot if they have their heads exposed. It is the first weapon that Aran gets to craft in the Forge of the Gods and is a decent weapon when dealing with the Queen's Hounds.

Even if your free time is limited, it's still possible to enjoy a great action RPG.

The Queen's Hounds can be heavily armored, and in one of Aran's first encounters with them after leaving the camp house, the Hyssop is the better choice over the sword he starts the game with. However, it's slow and has low blocking defence. Players have to time their shots or use sneak attacks from behind. Enemies with smaller weapons are generally faster and hit Aran before he finishes his swing.

4 Warhammer

A Heavy Weapon With Piercing Damage

Weapon Type

Polearm

Forge Scroll Requirements

Kill 10 Mayhem Warmongers

The Warhammer has similar properties to the Hyssop, but as well as a blunt weapon, it has a piercing side too. It can tear through enemies with a light swing and finish enemies with lower armor with one blow. However, like other polearms in Blades of Fire, it's a slow weapon with a low defense, so despite its devastating damage output, it leaves Aran vulnerable against faster enemies or if he's surrounded. It's better against slower enemies like the troll or the Mayhem Warmonger.

There are two Mayhem Warmongers with gate keys in Besacarr Hamlet, but they don't respawn. There is a Warmonger in the Hollow Plains camp to the east that respawns. Kill him eight times to unlock the forget scroll for the Warhammer, and make sure you have Adso with you to chronicle the kills and obtain the Forge Scrolls.

3 Army Sword

Aran's Starting Weapon Is Weak, But A Better Version Can Be Crafted

Weapon Type

Sword

Forge Scroll Requirements

Aran's first weapon

Aran gets his first sword in the game's introduction, but while serviceable, it's surprisingly weak when coming up against the first set of the Queen's Hounds in Besecarr Hamlet. However, a Sword Seneschal in Besacarr will provide Aran with new upgrades for all swords that can be forged in the game.

How To Farm Iron & Materials In Blades Of Fire

Learn how to farm iron and other materials to get the best possible weapons early in Blades of Fire.

Forge a new version after activating the Seneschal using better quality steel and iron, and the Army Sword becomes a vastly better weapon, that's fast with slashing and piercing attributes that can finish enemies in one shot under the right circumstances, and decent defense with the right materials.

2 Claymore

A Powerful Greatsword That Can Slice Through Multiple Enemies

Weapon Type

Greatsword

Forge Scroll Requirements

Kill 60 Putrids In The Hollow Plains

The Claymore is one of the most powerful weapons you can unlock early and would arguably be the best if its weight didn't hold it back slightly. However, those who enjoy using a heavy sword that's still faster than the Warhammer and the Hyssop, the Claymore is a terrific weapon.

It has similar defensive properties to the Army Sword, and Aran can land surprisingly fast chain attacks where just two light hits from the Greatsword will finish most enemies. Moreover, it's capable of decapitating at least two enemies at once with a heavy swing of the sword.

1 Longspear

Fast With Heavy Slashing And Piercing Damage

Weapon Type

Spears

Forge Scroll Requirements

Kill Five Spearmen

Thankfully, one of the most effective weapons in Blades of Fire can be unlocked early after killing five spearmen in the Besacarr Hamlet area. Make sure that Adso is by Aran's side to chronicle the kills and head to the Forge of the Gods to craft the spear.

More upgrades will become available for the spear after activating the Spear Sensechal in Besacaarr Hamlet. Opt for Flamed Head and a Concave cross section for maximum damage. The Longspear is the perfect weapon to take down the Trolls in Besacarr and the Hollow Plains and will make quick work of smaller enemies with its combination of speed and power.
