Gone are the days of Ichigo solely being accompanied by the likes of Rukia, Uryu, Sado, and Orihime. For newcomers to the game, selecting a starter character for the mobile game might be simply a matter of choosing their favorite Bleach characters. However, those who want to dwell on the strategic component of the title may want to look into the best starter characters that can help players blast their way through the early parts of the game.

Thankfully, fans who can’t wait for the anime any longer can play Bleach Brave Souls and enjoy mixing-and-matching their favorite characters into strong three-man teams. However, while the game is generous with its first offerings of free characters, fans might be curious as to who their priorities should be. Suggestions for must-have starters include a variant of Ichigo’s father, themed versions of Toshiro and Orihime, and an anniversary edition of Ichigo Kurosaki.

13 Isshin Kurosaki (Power)

A Durable Tank For Emergencies

While first introduced as Ichigo Kurosaki’s human father, fans were surprised to discover that Isshin Kurosaki was not just a Shinigami, but a former Shinigami Captain. The protagonist’s father showcases his prowess in the gacha title as Isshin Kurosaki (Power), his form when he took up arms against Aizen when the latter attacked Karakura Town. In the game, he possesses more Flash Steps (Sprinter), has a larger AOE for normals (Long Reach), and naturally ignores enemy defenses (Guard Break).

This Isshin variant’s Special Move is a knockback-with-slash (Support Slash) that deals immense damage.

Newcomers interested in grabbing a decent tank can find one in Isshin, especially in PVP where he can ignore Temporary Invincibility, get immunity to attacks and statuses at the start of combat, and even stop enemies from recovering Stamina. Not only that, he can prevent enemies from reviving when knocked out. While certainly not a DPS powerhouse, Isshin’s natural defenses and sub-DPS potential may outlast opponents with the right kit.

12 Toshiro Hitsugaya (Mind, Party Time)

A Solid Choice To Farm Heart Link Potions

It’s unsurprising for a gacha game like Bleach: Brave Souls to feature special versions of characters outside events in the Bleach story, and Toshiro Hitsugaya (Mind, Party Time) is one such occurrence. Now dressed with a knitted vest inside a double-breasted jacket, Toshiro becomes quite the stylish lad instead of being the youthful Shinigami Captain. This variant of Toshiro specializes in eliminating Hollows, even bypassing those with Dodges (Read Hollow Dodges) and conveniently possesses more Flash Steps for better mobility (Sprinter).

However, where this version of Toshiro shines is his +30% Heart Droplet Drop and +5 Link Slot Potions Drop, making him an extremely convenient find for Link Slot Potion farming. While other characters are admittedly similarly-equipped for such a specialization, Toshiro being a limited-time alternate-attire character makes him a more attractive choice for beginners.

11 Orihime Inoue (Speed, The Manor)

A Guild Quest Powerhouse

Series leading lady Orihime at first seemed like a generic damsel in distress, but her psychic potential slow reveals her as a support powerhouse throughout the Bleach series. This is all the more reflected in Orihime Inoue (Speed, The Manor), where she can drastically boost the effects of buffs for her team. Not only can she enhance Buff effects (Booster), she can also enhance both the duration (Enhancer) of buffs and inflicted status ailments (Debilitator). These are on top of increasing the number of generated barriers (Multi-Barrier), and even grant temporary status immunity for herself and allies (Shared Complete Status Immunity).

Such defensive perks allow this variant of Orihime to specialize in Guild Quests, especially since they tend to require specific builds throughout their many stages. Newcomers who likely don’t have access to optimized teams can bring Orihime as a solid support unit, especially since she can amplify buffs received by the whole team. Not to mention, her nature as having an alternate maid outfit instead of her traditional costume makes her a limited-time character worthy of the acquisition.

10 Grimmjow Jeagerjaques (Speed, Resurreccion)

Decent DPS For PVE With Unique Appearance

Steadfast and headstrong Grimmjow Jeagerjaques easily becomes Ichigo’s primary rival in the Hueco Mundo arc, and none would match his speed as the 6th Espada. In his Resurreccion, Grimmjow embraces his heritage as a panther-like Arrancar, giving him immense speed and strength. When used in Bleach Brave Souls, this Bleach character becomes one of the most balanced characters in combat.

Stalwart and serious Ulquiorra Shifar serves as the 4th Espada, making him one of the most powerful Arrancar to ever exist. Serving as one of Ichigo’s fiercest (and pretties) foes in the Hueco Mundo Arc, beneath Ulquiorra’s quiet self is a merciless foe - proficient in both sword and using the full extent of his monstrous abilities.

In the Bleach Brave Souls RPG, Ulquiorra is reliable for his potential performance in the PVP-heavy Arena. His Soul Trait alone decreases Fire duration by 55% and his strong attack recharges by 12%, making him inherently capable of accessing stronger moves. Likewise, his Arena Skills boost his stats by 40% and his strong attack damage by 30%, making him a powerhouse. On top of that, his Arena Soul Traits give him Focus +30 as well as another 13% boost to strong attack damage.

8 Ichigo Kurosaki (Mind, 7th Anniversary)

A Surprisingly Potent Ranged Specialist

Despite the ending of the Bleach story, hardcore fans still theorycraft on how characters might change or develop after experiencing different circumstances. Such is the case of Ichigo Kurosaki (Mind, 7th Anniversary), where his return as a Soul Reaper has been affected by the presence of Uryu Ishida’s Quincy Powers. This is on top of having access to additional and more potent Strong Attacks (Frenzy, Berserker), more Special Move hits (Bombardment), and bypassing Ranged Guard and Ranged Attack Resistance (Sharpshooter). More importantly, whale he gets temporary immunity against status ailments (Shared Complete Status Immunity), he can increase the duration of the statuses he inflicts on enemies (Debilitator).

7 Soi Fon (Speed, Shikai)

When Yoruichi Shioin left her post as 2nd Division Captain and leader of the Stealth Force, her protege Soi Fon took her place. As prideful as she is skillful, Soi Fon can deftly use the wind to her advantage to kill foes before they even notice it, even without using her Bankai. In Brave Souls, Soi Fon brings his specialization in combat, making her a great companion in most game modes.

Despite the nature of Bleach Brave Souls as a trio-based RPG, characters in the Bleach game don’t always have healing skills, making the likes of Orihime Inoue extremely useful. In the series, Inoue starts as a damsel in distress who slowly unlocks an arsenal of supportive abilities, making her one of the most reliable characters in the franchise. In Brave Souls, this is reflected in her balanced toolkit.

For her Soul Trait, Orihime reduces strong attack recharges by 10% and can recover up to 20% stamina when in between quest areas. Meanwhile, her Arena Soul Trait grants her Focus +30 as well as a 65% reduction to Weaken duration. Lastly, her Arena Skills give her 40% more stats and 30% strong attack damage boosts.

5 Uryu Ishida (Mind, Ransotengai)

Anti-Paralysis With Strong, Special AOE Boosts

Being a prodigy even among the rare Quincy, Uryu Ishida has become one of the most reliable allies of Ichigo Kurosaki. Knowledgeable in all things related to Quincy, Uryu also taps into skillsets that even the likes of researcher Mayuri couldn’t understand: the Ransotengai. This allows Uryu to use his body even when incapacitated through sheer reiatsu alone, and this helps him to excel in all manner of combat.

In the Brave Souls RPG, Uryu’s resiliency is reflected in his capacity to perform more consistently in combat compared to others. His Soul Trait allows him to reduce Paralysis by as much as 55% and boosts his Dodge by 11%, making him a more defensive character. Moreover, his Arena Soul Traits give him Focus +30 and boosts his normal attacks by 13%, with his Arena Skills giving all of his stats a 40% boost as well as another 30% boost to his normals.

4 Retsu Unohana (Technique, Shikai) (Higher)

All-Around Healing Powerhouse

Despite being known as one of the best healers among the Shinigami Captains, Retsu Unohana holds the prestige of being the longest holder of the Kenpachi title, making her one of the deadliest beings in the entirety of the Bleach universe. When not using the full extent of her powers, Unohana uses the Shikai form of her Zanpakuto Minazuki, giving her access to immense healing abilities.
